There is a motherboard + base on eBay right now for $89 if you want to go that route.

Pick up a T60 as well and you can do the swap for around $200.

Would you perhaps be kind to provide a specific link (or item number) for this? Thanks in advance!

Possibly ebay.com/itm/150735067969, but this one is US $94.99 buy it now.
According to the description, it is FRU 42W7648, so no Penryn capabilities by design.

Thanks! The listing says that the mobo comes from a T61 model/type 8896-A67 and that the mobo is 42W9380 (P/N or FRU?). Accroding to Lenovo, the T61 8896-A67 has these specifications:
ThinkPad T61 (8896-A67)
Based on 8896-2FU: T7300(2GHz), 1GB RAM, 80GB 5400rpm HD, 14.1in 1024x768 LCD, Intel X3100, CDRW/DVD, Intel 802.11agn(n-disabled), Bluetooth, Modem, 1Gb Ethernet, UltraNav, Secure chip, Fingerprint reader, 6c Li-Ion, WinXP Pro
... so indeed a Merom-based T61 (taking up to a 2.6 GHz T7800, without needing to do the Middleton-modded BIOS "update"). If searching (on this fantastic site!) for "42W9380" you'll find the thread *SOLD* T61 4:3 SXGA+/ 2.6Ghz/4GB/320GB/DVDRW/FP/9cell where the 42W9380 is listed (being the P/N) with the FRU being 42W7648... as rumbero (of course!) already correctly pointed out.

Notice however that the T61 in question has been stripped down to a very barefoot thing: "The m/b is minus the : ram, optical drive, cpu, fan, hard drive and top cover as pictured"... :?

I made an offer on that board about two months ago, told him I'd pay his price if he can include the heatsink/fan, but he said he had to look for it... so I ended up buying a complete unit instead.

I didn't wanna pay over $100 for a board then have to go hunt down a rare heatsink too, and the unit I got wasn't a lot more then the board and heatsink would have cost.

ps. I second the opinion that your best bet is to put one of these in a 15" T60/T60p, the 14" 4:3 is very unremarkable on either model.
