T400s max ram
T400s max ram
Can the T400s accept 2x8GB modules? I believe the max ram officially was 8GB, but I just wanted to make sure that no one has successfully put 16GB in there T400s. Thanks for the help.
Re: T400s max ram
A search of these forums will probably tell you the answer which is: If Lenovo says 8GB is the maximum then that's that.
You can fit as much as you like, whatever the cost, but once the bucket is full you cannot put anymore in there.

Re: T400s max ram
Actually killer, misbah is asking a highly valid questions. Lots of Thinkpads can accept and use more than the IBM/Lenovo specified amount of memory. For example, Lenovo indicates that X61 series units can only take 4GB max but I am typing this on an X61s with 8GB.killer wrote:A search of these forums will probably tell you the answer which is: If Lenovo says 8GB is the maximum then that's that.

This issue is so real that ThinkWiki actually has a page where people document what memory and memory combinations over and above official spec they have or have not been able to run their Thinkpads with although the page has not been updated for a while.
For misbah, there seem to be many documented cases of 8GB installed in a T400 of but I cannot find anyone who has managed to install 16GB.

Re: T400s max ram
I don't believe the mobile *M45 chipsets can handle more than 8GB. Current generation Sandy Bridge (*M67) and next gen "Ivy Bridge" yes, but not the older gen chipsets with Merom and/or Penryn CPUs.
Remember reading posts where people have tried 16GB in T410s and the computer would POST but then hang when loading the OS (Win7 x64).
It's risky - if you have direct access to 8GB DDR2 RAM SODIMMs then go ahead and try, but I wouldn't recommend buying them specifically to try this out.

Re: T400s max ram
Neither would I as one of the folks that bought an 8gb stick for my T410 only to pay a restocking fee to send it back...

Re: T400s max ram
The T400s came with either a C2D SP9400 or SP9600 and it actually uses DDR3 1066. Initially the specs said that the max was 4GB, just like the X61. However, it does indeed support 8GB (2X4GB).
The is absolutely no situation that exists where 8GBx2 would ever work on a T400s motherboard. Take my word for it or not. Some folks have money to throw around and restocking fees don't mean a thing.
