There's been talk of fuel cells for years, I am very surprised to read that these things are still at the prototype stage :?

You do realise that for the last 30 years or so oil companies have bought the patents, technology, rights etc for such 'alternative' technologies in order to keep their businesses ticking along don't you? It's one huge cover up that just gets swept under the carpet and it's the reason why we never seem to have fossil-fuel replacements ready or at an advanced stage......

I can't prove it because I do not have a source to quote but I've read about it and it's made the off headline here and there (no, not on the BBC ). It seems legitimate and perfectly plausible to me. I can quite believe it goes on.

You've got to stop reading the Guardian Steve!

Seriously, next we'll hear about the 200MPG carburetor the automobile companies are suppressing.

Or the car that runs on water the Saudis have under lock and key.

Or Charles is a closet poof. Or Charles isn't a closet poof!

Aliens at Area 51.

Ad infinitum, ad nauseum.

Hear, hear Rick. Where are the tree-huggers when it comes time to buy expensive solar panels in lieu of cheap electricity from the mains? Or insisting on taking their own car to work, alone, rather than ride public transportation?

We in the US should be the last to complain about energy and fuel costs, we pay some of the lowest prices for them among the developed nations.

I'm embarassed by the number of 7MPG Hummers leaving my community every morning to commute. Usually with ONE person in them! The US meritocracy and Madison Avenue drive the adage that small homes/cars/boats are for small people.

i learned to be independant while living aboard my sailboat..
a little less independant on the motoryacht, but still more insulated from the vagaries of normal disasters..
(i.e. hurricanes bob, andrew and others)

and lately, here, after the stormiest sept last year my 20kw genset kept us supplied with power for 19 days..

fuel cells for gensets would be terrific and when such is economical, i'm sure the oil (aka energy) companies will be happy to supply the fuel part of fuel cells..

james..
don't mention HUMMERS to batuta.. he used to drive one..
