End of life for A22P?

#1 Post by Indy452 » Mon Jan 16, 2012 2:33 pm

I'm reaching a point with my most favorite laptop of all time......I think my IBM A22P is about the most awesome laptop I've owned but its just getting to the point that even the hobby use I give it is almost too slow to use.....I wiped the Windows 2000 off it long ago and have used some sort of Linux os with it since then and currently using Puppy Wary for older hardware. But is there any other ways to use this old Laptop?

Its not really worth anything so selling it would be a waste of time but surfing the net is pretty much frustrating with all the flash and java crud slowing the old girl down....I'm just looking for other creative ways of keeping it in the game besides being a door stop....

What have any other members done? I wish I could put a more modern motherboard in it but thats beyond my skill level...and probably not possible anyway...

She's pretty much maxed out with 512 ram and a 30GB hard drive with cdrw/dvd and 1600x1200 resolution running a Pentium 3 996mhz. This thing was the [censored] in 2002!! Thing is its still ticks right along...no problems with it whatsoever.

What to do??

Find a used 15" A31p (USB1.1), or T41/T41p, T42/T42p or R50p (all USB2.0) with ATI graphics and a broken LCD.
Intel graphics will not support the UXGA from your A22p.
Broken LCD machines should be available cheaply.
Then transfer the LCD into the new machine.
All of the above support up to 2GB RAM.

So... what browser are you using?
Firefox + Adblock Plus + NoScript (if you want but optional) will make a big difference; though it may not solve the root cause of the problem.
W520 (i7-2720M, Quadro 1000M), T41, 600E
Just say no to the ThinkBook Pro.

I'd go back to W2K or FLP. Use Kmeleon as a browser and find the lightest AV imaginable.

It should do just fine. I love these machines.

I agree - W2K (ideally) but most importantly - use Firefox and Adblock+ (I havn't tried noscript, but will). Flash and scripts in webpages is the problem. Firefox + Adblock+ solved those problems for me with older thinkpads, including my PII models.

Uh...
Windows 2000 hasn't had security support for years now. Personally, I wouldn't let a W2K box anywhere near any network that I managed...

The A series has always bin kinda crappy in my oppinion!
I had both a A20m and a A22m - treated them both like a son and both failed on me - messed up RAM banks, plastic cracks, flexing.....uuuggghhhh - you ThinkPad had it's days - let it retire as a server, fax modem, network bridge or something.....get a nice T23 for $50 off ebay, put in your HDD, upgrade to 1GB RAM and you will be flying with 1.2GHz!!!

Runs great with XP and the 1GB are really noticable!
I managed to live with a T20 running XP Prof. SP3 in 2009-2010 (12GB, 192MB, 8MB GPU) - if you keep it slim, your T23 will be flying!!!
