X32 Boot issue

#1 Post by timpotte » Thu Jan 19, 2012 9:17 am

I have an older X32 thinkpad.

I started getting a BSOD of death. After that the computer failed to boot. When I say failed I do not even get the access IBM screen. I have removed the battery and tried it. Still the same issue. Additionally removed HD and same issue.

The screen does come on intermittent. It did flash the bios access IBM screen however was stuck there.

The back light never lights however I do get the Z indication that it has power.

Are there issues that I should start with to look at this problem. Where should I be looking. I read in another post that the CMOS battery or that the Wifi card could have gone bad. However I do not think I should start there as the clock is always correct and the wifi card i would think it would not stop the computer from getting to the Bios screen.

Is my thinking correct? Any help or advice would be appreciated.

Thanks.
Tim

Ok so now it booted through. It is working again. What in the world could be the issue or what should I be looking for.

Thanks

Backup your files and test the hard drive. Could be a symptom of a failing hard drive. Could also be the CMOS battery is dead. Have you noticed the laptop losing track of the date?

No problem with time.

I do have it now on a cooling pad. The hard drive seems to be fine. I tried the T42 fan controller yet that does not work on the X32. Is there any way to get the fan to not start according to the Bios. I am thinking it is a heat issue.

If you think it's a heat issue then install some temperature monitoring software and post the results. The temperature shouldn't go much above 70C in normal operation. 45C to 60C is a typical range.

If the temperature does go too high there are a couple of things you can do quickly. Try cleaning the vents out and apply some new thermal compound.
