Which free options to pick with T42?

#1 Post by mickles » Tue Apr 12, 2005 1:40 pm

I've got my eye on a T42 15" SXGA and it has two setups, with different offerings:

1) Free 3-year onsite warranty + port replicator

2) Free extra AC adapter + battery

What do you guys think?

Well, it all depends on where you use your laptop most of the time.
If you use it at home and dont travel alot I would pick the port replicator. Moreover on-site warranty is not something you want to miss especially for free.
From the other hand if you travel alot it might be a good idea to have a spare battery and an extra AC adapter so you can have one adapter at home and one at work so you wont have to carry it all the time. Keep in mind that if you have a second battery and you dont use it it will still degrade over time, so dont get one if you dont need it (or get it when you need it).

So as I said it's up to you. It depends on what you need more.

Good luck.

The port replicator comes with a built-in AC adapter. It also gives you DVI, which you may want later on to add a second monitor.

I'd go for the 3-year onsite with port replicator option. You can pick up an extra battery cheap somewhere else.

Thanks guys! Didn't know the port replicator had an AC adapter.

I plan on taking it to and from school all the time, but no major travelling. The AC adapter being left in the wall at home would be excellent, and if the port replicator has it... I think that makes my decision easy.

I heard people saying for the DVI you need the Port Replicator II, how do I know which one they are offering here?

I don't know which offer you're referring to. Can you provide a link?

This isn't the exact model I'm looking at but

EDIT:
Apparently none of these links work. Ummm try www.ibm.ca --> products --> notebooks

Click on "View all T-series"
Click on 3rd page
Look for the RCU with port replicator and security lock.

Well, I found the RCU 2378RCU on the web page, but I never saw any package deal with that included the free Port Replicator and warranty.

I wouldn't worry about it. IBM only sells the Port Replicator that IBM would sell with that notebook will be the PR II which has the DVI.

Get the port replicator and warranty, like everyone else have said.

PR is so convinient. No dangling cables around the notebook.

Warranty is a peace of mind for 3 years.

The port replicator uses an AC brick as well. The dock unit doesn't require any AC Adapter. Just so you don't get any surprises when you receive your unit. Unless they bundlle the port replicator w/ an extra AC adapter.

Can anyone confirm that the port replicator doesn't come with an AC adapter?

It doesn't, you're expected to use the brick that came with your laptop.

Which is senseless really, especially at the price.
