Should I replace the CMOS Battery ?

#1 Post by gbatch3 » Sat Jan 28, 2012 12:31 pm

We picked up 3 T41 (2373) Thinkpads. I have successfully done a software recovery on each one and they all seem to work fine, with the exception of the wireless adapters which I discussed in another post.

I am now wondering if, while I have the machines open to replace the wireless adapters, I should replace the CMOS battery in each one. Don't know the useful life of one of these, but it seems to me it wouldn't be a bad idea to replace them. If I do, does anyone know a good source for the battery and which battery does it take?

Thx

CR2032, available in any pharmacy/drugstore.
Those are for DYI replacement, i.e. cut open the yellow cover along the side, carefully rip off the old contact strips, flatten them with a hammer (not TOO flat), then put them back against the new battery (red +, black -), put some scotchtape around it, put yellow cover back on again with some scotchtape.
You'll need to set Time/Date when you next boot.
CAREFUL: check that there are NO BIOS-passwords on that machine BEFORE you remove the CMOS battery!

Or, buy a handful off eBay (search for ibm cmos battery).

Thx for all your help. I'll pick some up and do each laptop while I have the case opened.
Have to remove the Administrator password and the User password.

I should have been more specific: there should be no passwords in the BIOS before CMOS-battery removal.
Windows or Linux passwords are irrelevant in this context, leave them alone.

We are not allowed on this forum to discuss anything to bypass/remove BIOS passwords.
But look at this official Lenovo document first: http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/detail. ... MIGR-59377
If you still need assistance afterwards, PM me.
