Second Generation R61 Boards?

#1 Post by Nycto » Sun Jan 29, 2012 10:06 am

So I noticed on the marketplace, a forum member is selling T61 boards with 'second generation' nVidia GPU's...my guess being that these don't have the same GPU failure that plagued laptops from that era.

That being said, I have an R61 which I love, all except for three things. The offset screen (I'm a little OCD, so this drives me nuts), no numberpad, and of course, the Intel graphics.

So, therefore, if I could find a second generation R61 board that comes GPU problem free, I could learn to love this little guy a little bit more :) The question is...do they exist?

Sell your R61 for $200 - ish and add $50-$100 ontop and oyu can buy a manufacturer refurbished / off lease Microsoft Authorized refurbished R61 with nVidia Graphics! Make shure to tell the seller to ship you one with a Manuf Date of August 2008 or later! ;D

There are no R61 machines with nVidia graphics. They all have Intel graphics.
Contact forum member TuuS, he might know if an nVidia mobo from a same-size T61 will fit in your R61.

Of course there were. 7743-N4U would be one example. If you're R61 is running fine, why spend any money on it? You can always fix it later if it breaks. Probably the safest option would be to get one with an Intel GPU.

Never seen them in any HMM. Care to give me a link for the nVidia R61 HMM? Thanks.

Hah, I was getting ready to bump this thread, because I hadn't gotten any responses to it.

I've talked to Tuus about the possibility of sticking a T61/p board in an R61 chassis, and he thinks they're different enough that a simple swap isn't feasible. I don't really want to buy a gutted T61/p, just to swap ram, drives, cpu, etc around, and then have a gutted R61 leftover. Since Tuus had these second generation T61 boards, I wondered if any R61 boards were ever made with the same updated GPU. I too thought R61's were Intel only until I printed off the manual and found the models with nVidia graphics. What I don't know is if any 08/08 R61's shipped with Nvidia GPU's.

The R61 is pretty much my main laptop right now, and given the nature of some of the things I do at class/work, something a bit heftier in the graphics department would be nice. I can't spend a lot of money right now, as I've just rebuilt my home desktop, and so upgrading to a new generation of Thinkpad isn't really feasible at the moment.
