Burning hot T41p
My t41p gets very hot. If a play a game, like NFSU2 it works perfekt, the game runs smoothely and everything seems just fine, but after about 10 minutes the computer shuts down. This has happend in some other games to, so i installed "Mobile Meter" and realised that my CPU goes up to about 94 degreess celsius (201 Fahrenheit) Is this normal? Is there anyway i can get the temperatur down? I have seen these laptop coolers that is placed under the laptop, but does´nt know if they help.
Any ideas?

Hi,
Yes, with such games it would be normal your TP to get close to 80 or so degrees celsius... but no more than that.
Make sure your fan is working (you should notice a breeze of air out of the machine from the left side vent grill). If it's not then either the fan is broken, or the temp sensors are, or there's a bad fan power connection...
Also make sure you are not holding the thinkpad on top of something that could obstruct airflow or is hotter than ambient... such as your lap.
Afterwards, if the problem persists, I'd say that your processor's heatsink is not making proper contact with the CPU...

Re: Burning hot T41p
It does get very hot, but definitely should not get that hot that it should shut down. Otherwise what's the purpose of having something powerful without being able to utilize it fully.Statsminister wrote:My t41p gets very hot. On mine, temp goes to ~75 degrees while on the table, went to ~80 when on bed, throttling (reducing speed) should start at 86 degrees. (celcius everything of course :))

my t41p does that occasionally while playing half life 2. I thought that it might be because the gpu doesn't have any sort of cooling system and the video card was overheating. it helped a lot when i stopped playing the games in my bed on my blanket. When i put it on a table, it rarely does that at all unless I am pushing it pretty hard. Hope this helps...
I have the same problem, and have had it ever since I got my t41p. In demanding 3D games it simply shuts off when it gets hot. And it does get hot.
It's not because the fan is broken, because it isn't
And it's not because of air flow, because I have made experiments where my thinkpad has rested on 4 match boxes in each of the 4 corners, giving ample airflow underneath it, and it still shut down.
Been meaning to send it in for repairs, but I never have the time.. I just can't spare my thinkpad because I always seem to need it badly for educational purposes

I was playing Warcraft III for a few days (+/-12 hours/day) and noticed the temp went up to 78°C too.
Fan worked well so no real problems.
After that I had put it on 4 empty cassette boxes the temp went down to around 72/74°C...
I was just wondering: are such high temperatures not harmfull for my beloved machine?
From what I read in this topic and others, this is the normal temperature for a T41 but still it's HOT imo.
Such heat can't be really good for a machine, especially 12 hours non-stop? Or am I worrying for nothing?
Ah and another question just popped in: what is the normal maximum for the model I have?
THANKS!

The temperature for the processor to lower its clock is 86 degrees, max as far as I remember was 100 degrees, so I wouldn't worry about frying it while playing (if of course everything works as it is supposed to, eg. fan).Zoruglu wrote: I was just wondering: are such high temperatures not harmfull for my beloved machine?

Neither would I worry about permanent damage due to the heat, Thinkpads are meant to be used under high load (as graphics/video processing for example is) and if using the machine normally somehow damages it, you'll get a replacement. Why else is there a point to sell machines with such components if one cannot use them :)

I meant max that the CPU can tolerate, according to Intel's specifications, it's ~100 degrees.awolfe63 wrote:Max is 93 degrees
At 93 the machine itself may shut down, that's logical to shut the machine down a few degrees before the CPU gets damage.

Hi,
For whai it's worth, I've been running the world community grid proteome folding project continously for the last 4 months in my T40, almost non stop, with the processor constantly at around 77º C. Thinkpads have no problem with this temps...

my thinkpad (KTU 2.0ghz) is running at about 55 degrees under idle load. i ran 15 minutes of Prime95 and the temperature topped off at around 87 degrees (using mobilemeter). is this normal for this machine, cus it seems kinda hot. but it didn't drop processor speed during the stress test.

In reality it does seem quite hot, but as long as it doesn't affect any performance, I wouldn't care much.UCI2CI wrote:my thinkpad (KTU 2.0ghz) is running at about 55 degrees under idle load. i ran 15 minutes of Prime95 and the temperature topped off at around 87 degrees (using mobilemeter). is this normal for this machine, cus it seems kinda hot. but it didn't drop processor speed during the stress test.
The second I notice a speed drop I'd be on my way to call IBM.
Did the temp stay at 87 for a long time? If it only went there for a second or two, I'm supposing the CPU still lowered speed for a little time, perhaps Mobmeter simply didn't display it.

Hi,
Yep, 87ºC is too much. This machines will throttle at 89.5ºC before the cutout temp, which is 93ºC, so if your ambient temp increases only 3ºC you'll reach this and will notice a slowdown. My guess is that either your temp sensor is not correctly calibrated, your fan is not working properly, or your processor does not make good contact with the heatsink... in any case I'd definetly report this and get it fixed...

You also have to be mindful of the room temperature as well. This seems to affect the max temperature on my machine when I'm playing 3D games. I think that when the room temp was around 82F my max temp would reach to around 75C. But when the room is around 70F my max would only reach 68C.
So it should help if you try and keep the room cool too.

yeah, the temperature was at 87 for atleast 5 minutes until i stopped the test. although mobilemeter reported that temperature, the machine did not feel that hot, even when i put it on my lap. any how, ill call IBM to have them send someone over.

just wanted to ask another quick question before i call IBM.
when i put my hand near the vent, i can realy only feel air blowing out from the upper part of the vent (near the headphone jack). is this normal?
