Restoring OS on a new HD in a G41

#1 Post by CM40484 » Sun Feb 05, 2012 12:47 am

My hard drive died. Got a new one and put it in the computer.

I have the Rescue and Recovery CD P/N 19R9174 and the Product Recovery CDs (6 of them) P/N 39K7220. I ran those through as per the on screen instructions. Used the "restore factory defaults" option. All loaded.

But when I boot, it just keeps going back to the IBM Rescue and Recovery screen. It does not boot to Windows. I looked at the C: drive and there is no Windows directory.

Used an old 98 boot disc to fdisk and format the new drive with 40 Gigs space and did not use the large block mode. Redid the install as above. Same result. No Windows directory. Just loops back to the R&R screen.

Can someone please tell me what I am doing wrong. Please guide me so I can get XP back running.

Thanks,

Carl

Get DBAN (Darik's Boot And Nuke).
Run that to wipe your hard disk. Stop when it as at ca. 5%, that's enough.
Then restart your R&R, letting it format your HD.
You may need to limit the main (C-drive) partition to 120GB if it is a big HD (provided you can).
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)
