crash

I have a t60
while plugged in and with full batt the computer stated going into hibernate and then shut off completely in the middle of the hibernate.
wont go back on.
waited,
does go back on, but crashes before even getting stated.
opened it up and turned it on, got all the way to win, but then crashed again in a few minutes.
changed the cpu, changed the fan, changed the batt.
what else could it be? please don't say the mother board!!!!!!!!!!!!!

it crashes at all different stages of startup and windows. and then will not go on for a while

Memory, hard drive, metal "particles/pieces" in USB port(s) or elsewhere causing electrical short, loose/bad connector on hard drive, etc.

Check the memory first: if you have two memory strips, then remove one and test, then mount other other strip alone and test.
You may also wish to remove the hard drive, turn on the machine, and see if it stays powered up reliably, or if it still shuts down randomly.

checked the HD yesterday, no good
would a loose connection cause the computer not to go ion, I really think that isnt the case because it wont go on at all.
I doubt the USB idea, because it just crashed during normal use.

could the memory be it, i will check soon, but before I do (might not have time before i bring it in to the shop (no time to waste, in in finals) is there a chance that that kind of problem would cause the computer to have no response to the power button what so ever (which it sometimes does now)

Perhaps the on/off button on the keyboard is bad, perhaps 10 other things ... who knows? It is difficult enough to debug intermittent errors with the machine in hand. It is virtually impossible to do it remotely. If you have someone there who can assist, that will be the best route to finding the problem.

Perhaps someone else on this forum will have more suggestions ...

Try to boot from a Linux Live CD, such as Mint: http://www.linuxmint.com/download.php
I everything there works, you may have a software problem.
What have you got installed now?
What exact laptop do you have (TYPE-Model, such as 2007-47U)?

it cant be soft ware because it happened sometimes before the boot, and sometimes wont go on at all

also it seems that the longer i leave off it the longer it works without falling when i do turn it on, isnt that strange?

I think your laptop is plain overheating.
Time to refresh the thermal paste between CPU and cooler.
Buy some AS5.
Blow out all the dust from the fan (hold the blades) while you are at it.

Artic Silver 5 is some of the best thermal compound available, you should be able to get it at most any computer shop. It goes between the CPU and heatsink.

Unfortunately, I don't think it's as simple as that.

I have to say that I have a hard time believing overheating can cause such symptoms such as intermittently not responding to the power button.

Also, the only way I can envision a CPU getting hot so fast as to turn off before POST completes, is if there was no heatsink at all attached to it. Even with zero thermal paste it shouldn't get so hot.

But just to be safe - you said you changed CPUs - you did make sure there is some kind of thermal compound (even if it's old and bad) between the CPU and the heatsink, didn't you?

I would also test the RAM (looks like you haven't yet). Because it's one thing that can cause really peculiar failures, and it's simple to test (try different slots or different RAM sticks).

I would also try the "secret power button reset sequence". It has helped many people with machines that were completely dead:

unplug the AC adapter and take out the battery. Then, you push the power button 10 times in a row at one second intervals. Next, you push and hold the power button for 30 seconds. Then you put the battery back in and push the power button…

In your first post you said you changed the CPU. Are you sure it is "locked" in place in its socket, i.e., did you give the retaining screw on the socket its full quarter-turn? In any case, do it again!

I have 2 cpu's and 4 rams and i tried every combination...
there is some old glue

the only hardware change i made in the last few weeks was switch around the rams because one was dusty so i though maybe it would speed up the computer (it didn't instead it got windows to tell me that since it was installed i switched too much hardware and i need to re-authenticate it (its right, i changed the cpu, mother board, ram, screen, keyboard, wifi in the last 7 months)

the vodu worked, for like two minutes, and then it crashed again...

on more symptom - after a crash, it will power back on usually, only to crash a second later with a high pitched beep, followed sometimes with an automatic re-boot that also crashes immediately.

progress report: the vodu thing works even without taking out the batt, but it only works for about 3-4 minutes, thn I have to do it again...

Remove the battery, disconnect the LCD cable, connect an AC adapter, and see what happens with only an external monitor connected.

If your referring to the thermal paste (it's not glue), and you changed your cpu without applying new thermal paste, then it's no wonder your having problems. You may even have done serious damage to your system.

Get some arctic silver #5 paste and clean the chip and heatsink good with pure alcohol, but don't use the kind that has scents or oils added.

i replaced it only after the problem, and with the fan that was with it so there shouldn't be a problem
