Router Question... please help

I can figure this out... I have road runner DSL cable modem running directly into my mini dock for my t42... works great...

I am tired of my room mates using my computer to check baseball scores so i hooked up my old desk top and DSL router...

I plugged the main line into the INTERNET port of the router and have one cable running to my minidock and the other to the back of my DESKTOP... i thought everything was cool, except that the internet doesnt work on teh t42.

Interestingly.. when i check the network connections... when i have the internet going DIRECTLY into my mini dock it says 10.0 mbps... but when i have both cables running from the ROUTER my network connections on my T42 says 100mbps...

When I connect both computers from the router... my t42 recognizes a connection but when i click on DETAILS it doesnt look the same as when i have it plugged in directly...

I DONT KNOW AHHHH if anyone can shed some light on this i would be forever indebted.... first born child??? i dont know about all that...

The reason it says 10 or 100 MBPs is the speed of the device it's plugged into. The cable modem is only 10 MBPs, the router is 100 MBs.

Make sure your router is set up for DHCP (to give out IP addresses) and that your TP is also set to obtain an IP address from the router.

Shut everything down - TP, desktop, router, and cable modem. Wait a couple minutes.

Turn the cable modem and let it go through it's startup process. Once it is up and happy turn the router on and let it establish communications with the modem.

Now turn the TP on and let it start talking to the router. Log in, and see if it goy an IP address (click start, run, and type cmd. In the DOS window that opens type ipconfig). Make a note of the information then type exit to close the window.

Now do the same on the desktop.

Hopefully everything will work at that point. If not post back with the IP configurations of the 2 machines.

Your T42 is 'remembering' the IP information provided by the Cable Modem

Open a command prompt as Ed has advised then type:

ipconfig /release then press <Enter>
ipconfig /renew then press <Enter>

Should be all better!
