Anyway to track original part-ids with Thinkpad serial no. ?

#1 Post by A G » Wed Feb 15, 2012 1:39 am

Hi there,

I have got into a sticky situation, while getting my R61 serviced, and need your help.

Is there a way I can find out what are the serial-ids of the various components, like LCD,battery, processor etc. if I have just the serial number of my Thinkpad ?

Reason : The service center team messed up the Motherboard of my first ever & only Thinkpad, and after good round of verbal allegations & accountability reminders, they agreed to replace it (motherboard).

However, the technician informed me that they will provide no assurance that all the parts of the laptop are the same as those that were with original machine

They kept the laptop for about 45 days, saying that the part to be replaced is being ordered/shipped :x , which, in my opinion, is a very long time to 'misplace' some original parts of my laptop :!:

Please help !

Thanks
A G

in the past a thinkpad owner could, by going to the support page for his particular thinkpad model, use the M/T and S/N and thereby see the original build list..
each part and the FRU number for each part..
i'm sure that ability is still available..

also, there is no reason that your thinkpad should be waiting any part for 45 days..
such a delay is , to my mind, a constructive failure to honor the warranty..
you should be speaking to a supervisor or above..

As said, you can find out WHAT parts were in the machine when it came out of the factory, but NOT any serial numbers, other than that of the machine.

In the BIOS you could have seen the CPU S/N and motherboard S/N, but that is all.
Since the mobo is to be replaced, that info will be wrong anyway.

No telling what they do in the back room of the service department. After all, it is about time and money. How much time would it take to pop out the mobo and put in a new one vs trouble shoot one.

Just my thoughts.
