no boot with new memory?
no boot with new memory?
Just got a new 256mb memory chip, installed it in place of one of the existing 64mb chips on my 600e. on boot theres like 4 clicks that come from the speakers and then the system freezes (with new chip installed) before it starts windows.
is the memory defective or is it not supported by the 600e?
specs are:
PC100
142 pin (i think, it DOES fit into the slot in the mobo without force)
mem chips are apparently samsung chips.

What model 600E? Not all of them support 256MB sticks.

How many memory chips are there on each side of the stick?
Regards,
James

its model #2645-4BU, and it has 4 chips/side
it comes up on the bios when you first start the computer in the right hand corner and says "294336 KB OK", and then when its supposed to give you the beep and continue booting, it just starts buzzing from the speakers for maybe half a second and then freezes.
I've tried disabling the onboard 32MB memory as well thinking that if i'm installing PC100 memory and the onboard runs at PC66 that it may be a problem. After doing that and having only PC100 memory in the board, it just wont boot (sits there with power light and HDD activity light solidly lit, and a blank screen). At one point it got far enough to give me a 225 error, which is wrong memory speed in system board. I have the latest BIOS and everything.. do you think the size of the chip is too big, or that it just wont take PC100?
Another interesting thing i found is that all the memory i pulled from the computer was PC66, even though on that link you gave me it says that this model should be able to run PC100 memory.

Search eBay (title AND description) for 33L3070, the IBM part number. There's tons of it available and prices have fallen to the $50 to $60 range although it can often be found for much less.
