T43p abrupt shut down

#1 Post by Alejandro Audisio » Tue Feb 21, 2012 8:06 pm

My latest round of headaches with my T43p is that it simply turns itself off with no prior warning.... not a shutdown, its just a hard turn off.... my fan seems to work properly.... but Im thinking its overheating..... will buying a laptop cooler help me at all...???

That sounds like a:

1) bad CPU or

2) bad DIMM/DIMM slot

3) thermal sensor gone wild.

Laptop cooler will do absolutely nothing for any of the above.

Try swapping the CPU and check whether the conditions persist.

Good luck.

You can pick up a CPU for $10 or so on eBay...doesn't have to be PM780 for testing purposes.

Replacement takes 15 minutes even if you've never done it before, all that is required is # 1 Phillips screwdriver and an open HMM...

Good luck.

Darn.... I wish this T43 hadnt turned out to be such a lemon.... grrrrr

Huh...

You do understand that you're essentially treating a bout of Red Fever with aspirin and cold compresses, right?

The machine shouldn't be shutting down at all, unless you instruct it to...

As for the T43 turning out to be a lemon...the youngest one I've ever seen turned five this past January. That's a lot of years in a life of a laptop, be it a ThinkPad or not...

I know its not supposed to shut down.... Im trying to remain positive about this issue. I know this laptop is not the youngest, and I would not call it a lemon if this was the first and only issue I had with this machine... however, its given me grief from the very beginning.... I guess the lesson I learned is that its not worth it to buy refurbished machines... its my fault, as I had read that this series of machines had a history of CPU GPU and all the other issues..... well, its been (a very expensive) lesson learned.

(sigh)

Just out of curiosity...have you tried another CPU like I had suggested some time ago?

No, I havent tried this and frankly I dont think I will. Im guessing that this machine has various issues, HDD performance is also laggard and its not sounding normal as of late... I think I just need to accept that if it looks like a lemon, smells like a lemon and has this bright yellow color, its probably a lemon.

I must move on to a new machine... but this time, there is no chance in hell I will buy anything but a new machine.
