Which T series model for Linux?

#1 Post by linuxnotebook » Thu Apr 14, 2005 5:50 am

Dear all,

Is there any recommended model in the T series for linux?

Actually, after a lot of search I found out that T42/p and T43/p may be
the series that I am looking for a pre-installed linux. However, after seeing
their specs at the IBM website, I have come to know that none of the
models in the series come pre-installed with linux. You can view the
T42/p website here for yourself:

>http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-57839

I quote following from the above page:

"
The following operating systems are supported on the IBM ThinkPad T42p systems:

Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional (SPO, SP1, SP2, SP3, SP4); with USB 2.0 support
Microsoft Windows XP Professional (no service pack, SP1) with USB 2.0 support
"

In addition, there is this small note over there

"Operating systems other than those preinstalled on the systems may not provide full-feature functionality "

which clearly means that if I later try to install linux on this machine, all
the hardware might not be supported...

What should I do under the circumstances? Is there any particular model
that comes with pre-installed linux?

Thanks in advance

There are various hardware items that do not have a Linux driver available, I'm sure someone who runs Linux on a ThinkPad can give you a few examples.
(2373-G3G) T40p/P-M 1.6GHz/1GB/60GB/14.1 SXGA/64MB ATI Fire GL 9000/CDRW-DVD/Cisco 802.11b/WinXP Pro SP2

(2373-8TG) T42/P-M 735/1GB/40GB/14.1 XGA/32MB ATI Radeon 7500/CDRW-DVD/Intel 802.11bg/WinXP Pro SP2

Maybe the "Thinkpad" button.
T60 2623-D7U, 3 GB Ram.
Dual boot XP and Linux Mint.

Actually, I have to buy the notebook for the Institute where I work.
They would only buy from an oem representative which I have today
found from the ibm website.

The pre-installed thing is to ensure that the hardware works perfectly,
because if something even if it runs on a not-supported os, may not
run full functionality.

I think customize to order thing may provide me the choice for a pre-installed and supported linux.

Thanks all for your help.
