It happened...my T61 blue screened.......
I was browsing the net when my screen suddenly went black (no baack light either) and i got the bluescreen of death...

Re: T61 blue Screen!!!! D:
The key bit of information missing here is does this problem persist. A software crash is common, but if this was caused by hardware failure and your system won't post, then you have a problem.

posdts perfectly - no artifacts - went trough 3d mark 2001 on mx twice, Thinkvantage PC doctor showas PASS on all GPU tests - how can i tell if this was hardware related?

If BSOD keeps coming back with the same info, like a bad penny, you're likely looking at a hardware problem...hoax32 wrote: how can i tell if this was hardware related?
Don't stress over it, though.
Use the machine and enjoy it.
If it drops dead, swap the planar and have fun with it again...

Thanks for the reply!
I got so upset, that i put in a different HDD and just installed XP prof......
What would you guess, is the problem?
Hardware or Software?
And what is the USUAL blue screen message of dying T61's?

Re: T61 blue Screen!!!! D:
Well, the way I'm reading it, your BSOD was nVidia-driver related.
Hardware or software? Who knows.
If it happens again...and again...then you'll know the answer.
Good luck.

Re: T61 blue Screen!!!! D:
OK!
I have bin using the laptop for now 7 hours straight with my fresh installed windows XP!
I also ran 3D Mark on MAX settings.
No BS or any screen problems so far......
I have researched a little and found out, that in the majority of the times the blue screen on dying T61's looks like this:
Problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.
Problem seems to be caused by the following file: nv4_disp
If this is the first time you’ve seen this stop error screen, restart your computer.
If this screen appears again, follow these steps:
The device driver got stuck in an infinite loop. This usually indicates problem with the device itself or with the device driver programming the hardware incorrectly.
Please check with your hardware device vendor for any driver updates.
Technical information:
** STOP: 0x000000EA (0x8A4803C8, 0x88FFD500, 0xBA4EFCBC, 0x00000001)
nv4_disp
beginning dump of physical memory
physical memory dump complete.
contact your system administrator or technical support group for further assistance.
.....but my BS is not caused by that same file.....
still worried....

Re: T61 blue Screen!!!! D:
I know a few people who believe that, as far as stability is concerned, it's best to use the operating system that a computer was originally designed for. In your case, that would be Vista Business 32bit. I am not saying I agree with this notion, but Vista would work well on the T61 anyway and in my experience, both 7 and Vista are much more stable than XP.
Microsoft Surface 3 (Atom x7-Z8700 / 4GB / 128GB / LTE)

What do you think was the cause for the Blue Screen?
Driver of Hardware?
And is there a version of the thinkvantage toolbox for XP?

Re: T61 blue Screen!!!! D:
A T61 nvidia failure (hard failure) presents with black screen, not blue screen, and no post at all. When powering up you get three beeps and nothing at all. A partial failure can present as graphic artifacts on the screen, nvidia driver crashing, etc... however it will rarely present as ONLY bluescreen errors. These type of errors are common for all windows environments it just means the software crashed. The cause of the crash could be software or hardware, but the effect is software.
As for your graphic processor, an 08/08 unit's processor is no better or no worse then millions of other computers that are unrelated to the prior nvidia issues. It's free of one specific defect, but that is no guarantee that it will last forever. With millions of these units made, there have been only a couple vague reports of 08/08 units failing, and nothing conclusive they had anything at all to do with the GPU. Even if it did, some failures are to be expected, but the prior versions fail at a rate of 1-3 per month going by what's reported on lenovo forums, which is still extremely low failure rate for something produced in the millions that is over 4yo.
Good Luck

Well it has bin some time now since that BS happened! (a month or something)
When I saw that XP ran well, I decidet to go to my old OS - win 7 again!
I reinstalled Windows 7 2 weeks ago and and did not have any craches or any artifacts what so ever happen!
I played high demanding games (including CoD4 and GTA 4) and everything is running fine!
Was it a drivers crash instead of a hardware crash?

Re: T61 blue Screen!!!! D:
Well..it happened again....3-4 months later...Was watching a youtube video, when the screen froze, audio started stuttering, screen went black....audio started playing again, audio stopped...same blue screen! :/
Ran 3d mark with no problems 3 times (over 40 minutes), tested the system with pc doctor (passes all 4 GPU tests) and played some CoD4......hardware or software?
Anything 2 be worryed about? :/

The length of test for every ThinkPad that I sell with discrete graphics is 1000 minutes.
Have you ran it that long?

Nothing to be scared of. It's just a laptop for crying out loud...doesn't bite, doesn't shoot...
Wouldn't you rather know where you stand, even if that means that the GPU is on its way out?

1000 minutes = >10 mours which I cannot spare! :/
I ran the Lenovo Toolbox stress test and hardware test, dont have much time to test stuff...but i still want to find out, if this is hardware or software.

Re: T61 blue Screen!!!! D:
I got it but...do you ever sleep?
Before you go to bed, start the test, let the fan run at max using TPFC and check what's what when you get up.
My student days were done with long before you were born, but I still can't afford to sit by the laptop for 10+ hours and wait to see whether it will blow the GPU under a stress test...
Good luck.
