XP hibernation : rebooting instead of shuting down

#1 Post by legu » Thu Apr 14, 2005 9:46 am

Hi all,
my very first topic here :D

Does anybody know if it is possible to force XP to reboot instead of shuting down when going into hibernation ?

I frequently switch between XP and linux, I don t want to wait for booting up XP and don t want to loose running programs.
This feature is available under linux and works just fine with software suspend 2, just have to press r to switch between reboot or shut down when going into hibernation.

I have never heard of Windows having this capability. If Windows can do this, the setting is probably hidden deep in the registry.

Although probably not a "feature" of XP, you might be able to set this up. I don't have a lot of details for you, but I remember back on my old 770x with NT, it wouldn't shut itself off, but would rather reboot instead. Eventually this was tracked down to a problem with the hardware abstraction layer (HAL) settings and I think there was a registry key to modify to enable power-off on shutdown. Maybe you could google up this key and tweak it the other way to get at least a partial solution?

Good luck; keep us posted.

Thank you Marc,
I've already googled a lot for this, but found nothing !
I've also searched the registry for some keys related to hibernation, without any luck ...

I don't know if this is what you want:

but if XP is hybernated and you turn on your Thinkpad again, you could press F8 to switch to the XP Bootmanager instead of booting XP (I think the Hybernation data is lost). If you use the XP Bootmanager instead of Grub to boot into Linux (Grub just installed in a separate /boot partition instead of MBR), this would safe you at least one XP boot before you boot a hybernated Thinkpad into Linux.

Hi Legu-

I looked up my old notes on the subject, and this is the fragmentary record I found:

"If you are tired of "it is now safe to turn off your computer" when you select Shut Down, Edit:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
Double click on PowerDownAfterShutdown or add it as REG_SZ. Set it to 1.
This only works if your HAL (Hardware Abstraction Layer) supports it.
"

I did this to make my 770x shut down all the way rather than reboot. Maybe changing the setting (to 0?) will make your system reboot rather than shut down on hibernate. No guarantees.

Hi Marc,

just checked that registry key and it already has the value 0 !

I'll try to ask this directly to ibm ...

I suspect IBM will say "What's a Registry". :D
