Upgrading t42 cpu to a LV or ULC CPU possible? +more updates

#1 Post by Alexanders » Mon Feb 27, 2012 8:02 pm

Hi everyone, I think this Ibm thinkpad is really a nice machine, silent well-engineered. I've become a big fan of Ibm thinkpads. I had a t60 previously and sold it for this t42 15 Inch with flexview.

As an attempt to lower the noise and heat as much as possible, I am looking at cpu upgrade possibilities.

By looking at this page, it seems that it may be possible to upgrade from my 1.7 pentium m to either

Pentium M LV 778
SL8QF (C0)
SL8QG (C0)
1.6 GHz 2 MB 400 MT/s 16× 0.988–1.116 V
10 W
Socket 479/FC-µBGA
Socket 479/FC-µBGA
January 19, 2005
RJ80536LC0252M
LE80536LC0252M
$284

or

Pentium M ULV 773
SL8LK (C0)
SL8LR (C0)
1.3 GHz 2 MB 400 MT/s 13× 0.812–0.956 V
5.5 W
Socket 479/FC-µBGA
January 19, 2005
RJ80536UC0132M
LE80536UC0132M
$262

--------------

My current processor is already undervolted with NHC, and idles at around 42 degrees. Also I am running Vista (when I bought it that's what it came with), and has 2gb of ram.

My plans is to get two cards of 2gb ram each , upgrade to windows xp sp3 (for 3.5 gb of ram).

Upgrade the original hard drive to the owc legacy ssd (if this is the best pata ssd available).

Also have the computer cleaned and perhaps re-apply thermal paste on the cpu/heatsink.

This computer is mainly for internet browsing, youtube, typing. Some gaming too, the game I play is halo 1 multiplayer and age of empires 2 online multiplayer
----

Is it even possible to upgrade the cpu? will there be noticeably less heat when gaming? will it be possible to play a smooth game of halo1 online with the 1.3ghz or 1.6 cpu + hard drive? thanks!

Welcome to the forum!

While I can't answer your question regarding LV/ULV CPUs on a T42, I can tell you for a fact that it won't take more than 2GB RAM. Not to mention the fact that I have yet to see a 2GB stick of DDR laptop RAM.

Yes, it is possible - and fairly easy - to replace/upgrade/downgrade the CPU. I'd be be hesitant to game on a machine of that vintage, though, but I'm not a gamer to begin with.

Happy upgrading.

thanks for your reply, I am a bit familiar with this forum, having read it many times before but it is the first time I am posting.

I just play games occasionally, these are two old games though. The TPD of my processor is 21 watts from what I can read on wikipedia, I wonder if going from a 21 watt tpd to a 10w tpd or even 5.5 watt tpd processor will have an impact on heat when gaming or watching youtube. I am alergic to sound and want to keep the laptop as cool as possible

also whenever i go to the library, my 8 year old laptop is more silent than people with new laptops. I'm telling myself that if I can bring those mods on this t42, then perhaps this thinkpad could be almost silent when gaming those old games.

Sorry to burst your bubble!
Those CPUs do not even fit in your T42, those are for soldering onto a motherboard!
Socket 479/FC-µBGA where BGA stands for Ball Grid Array.
You need Socket 479/FC-µPGA where PGA stands for Pin Grid Array.
