some minor flaws on my w520 - call warranty?

#1 Post by Bimm3rcc » Thu Mar 01, 2012 8:08 am

hi everyone,

2 weeks ago i recieved my thinkpad w520. How ever there are some small things that are bothering me.

1) the right part of the keyboard there is a lot of flexing, and the backspace sits lower than the other buttons
2) the display/ panel cover (the thing around the display where the webcam is ect) is loose on the right part of the the panel (it sticks out). and in general it wobbles a lot, seems like some screws are not tight.

should i really call warranty? or a these normal things.

i have 3 year onsite warranty..

thanks in advance

Also on performance:

I only get 4.7 in windows experience index and actually the laptops doesent seem to run faster when turbo boost is on? actually slower. Why?

I have a 2670QM, 4gig ram, 7200rpm HDD, 1000M graphics, 64 bit OS

hi Bim*;
seems the W520's havent had much IMPROVEMENTS in QUALITY since the early models I have had.....<sighs>
I used to have the early early models (SSD+mSata drives often pple calls them as TWIN SSD drives plus Secondary Drive bay with Normal HDD) and during one of my trips to Europe - I happen to be in Germany - got some issues .. SO i was sent over an @HOME replair Tech. All was fine till he came ! .... thats when the Horror story started.
GUY turned up and told me he was a APPLE EXPERT and didnt know much about TP but he will try!!! .. and long story short > when he left there was 3 SPARE SCREWS - which he told me ' they extra - wasnt necessary'....SO I called Lenovo Tech Support - who continued to tell me - if laptop is working - they cant do much about !!
SO UPON my return to homebase (Australia) I sent machine in to DEPOT REPAIR. - they called and told me they SENDINE ME NEW NEW MACHINE !!
...sorry dont mean to scare you - but my preferance would be to send to DEPOT REPAIR of any W520 as it seems not many HOME REPAIR pple know W520s that well and often cause /create lots more problems that what they start with! maybe there are better ones in DK as I havn't been lucky enough to have a breakdown during my stay in Co'gen ...
Nope the issues u described seems NOT NORMAL! - even though generally there is well know 'flexi-keypads' with W520s .... its not normal to get the B/SPACE to be way 'down'...

... but atleast (in my past expoeraince(s)) you get left with EXTRA/MORE EXTRA ISSUES than you started with via HOME REPAIRS. having have numerious bad experainces with these home repairs at various countries now! Not sure what your actual configuration is ...either way my suggestion would be to send it in for DEPOT Repair - yip i know u paid EXTRA for HOME REPAIR .... yeah it might be bummer to have no machine for a week or so

sorry for big blurb...
Cheers

Sounds like experiences can vary a lot; perhaps it has something to do with region. I had a fair amount of trouble with my T61p when it was newish and several on-site (=kitchen counter) service calls. Each tech was very careful about identifying where screws came from and would go, had the proper kit of replacement screws, had the USB boot floppy for writing the SN into the new main boards, was able/willing to listen to my reasonably competent of what had already been tried, etc.

I prefer the on-site repair because of its convenience, minimized downtime, and because I can keep an eye on my machine!

Windows Experience Index is composed of 5 scores, you only told us the lowest score. Disable Optimus and select dedicated graphics only and then rerun the assessment and tell us all 5 scores. Otherwise there is nothing wrong with your 4.7 on Optimus.

yes u are right, i removed optimus and selected discrete and i get in scoreS:

processor 7.5
ram 7.5
graphics 6.7
gaminggfx 6.7
hdd 5.9

somehow my ram got fast also :P strange. but fantastic results. I'm already planning on getting an msata in the future.

poor thing about the gap in the lid, but i think im just nickpicking here, i will call warranty in the next week anyway.. if i pay 1200€ it should be absolutely perfect in any way imo. However beside that im very satisfied

In your first post, you wrote,
the display/ panel cover (the thing around the display where the webcam is ect) is loose on the right part of the the panel (it sticks out).
Are you sure you aren't seeing the recessed area for the ThinkLight LED? At the upper-left corner of that trapezoid, the depth of the recess on mine is only 0.3mm next to the camera; at the upper right, it's 1.0mm to let the LED shine downward. Can't quite tell from what you wrote whether you mean the entire bezel or just the bit around the webcam.

I'm sorry i was probably unclear. i ment the entire "bezel" is loose on the right part. Meaning is not a tight fit.

The frame of the display if you want to call it like that, sticks out a bit on the right side.
