Installing a webcam on x200?

#1 Post by Tony Chan » Wed Mar 14, 2012 11:08 am

Can anyone share their experience of installing a webcam on a x200? I've just purchase one ( type 7358-RQ4) but it doesn't come with one.

Hi Tony. I've done it using one of those kits from fleabay. If you've taken a peek at the thinklight cable it has a little connector that is covered with some type of tape. That is what you will hook your camera up to.

Hiccups were:
  • My camera kit did not come with two screws needed to hold the module in place. My solution was to use one of the screws holding from around the LCD chassis. Otherwise I feared the camera would just fall out of position. Working fine so far :)
  • The third (wifi?) antenna was in the way so I had to move it slightly to the right so the module would fit snugly in place
  • You will most likely have to loosen up the LCD from the lid housing also. If you do not then trying to connect the camera to the thinklight/camera cable will be difficult
The X200 I have did not come with a camera (possibly bc of third antenna) but it is camera ready. It's pretty much plug and play. I forget if windows update found the driver but I'm pretty sure Windows update will find one for you regardless. The end result is my webcam works :)

Thanks for all the heads-up emeraldgirl.

I haven't get the laptop yet but I've already ordered a new camera kit that supposed come with 2 screw based on your comment. They only cost $10 :o at fleabay.

And I guess I can keep the third antenna then? I really want to get maximun wifi signal. Sounds like it's do-able though.

I was under the impression that all x200 are "webcam ready". How do I find out?

I'm pretty sure you have the moldings and the little plastic stubs sticking out for the screws. I would say that all X200 are both "camera ready" and "third antenna ready" in preparation for those CTO orders. Only caveat IIRC was that you could not have both the camera and that third antenna at the same time. From what I saw while installing my camera that appeared to be the case.
