T42 rescue and recover error: CRC errors during installation
T42 rescue and recover error: CRC errors during installation
due to a failing hard drive i had ibm send me a replacement in which i had no rescue recovery disks for. So i ended up creating the rescue and recovery disks using a friends T42 system which isnt the same model as mines. I don't know if that poses any problems. however when copying the images of the disks to my new hard drive, two subsequent crc (cylic redundancy check) errors came up when copying the 2nd and 4th disk. Despite the errors, windows xp installed fine without a hitch. My question is: how does these error come up and is it something i should be concerned about? Now, the disks were verified and seem to have no problems.
A CRC error means that one or more files failed an error correction algorithm for some reason. When a file is copied, there is a verify process that produces a checksum, and something "went south" with your copy process.
I am going to start with the obvious:
You DID use quality CD-R media to make this set of CD's, right???
As in, you did NOT use Memorex or generic media to make them?
(every time I see someone using Memorex media, there is some sort of issue, without fail!!!) You did NOT use GQ media from FRY's or Khypermedia from Office Max, etc. etc.
Quality media would (for me) mean that the spindle or package shows JAPAN as the country that they are made in (the best media comes from Japan), and they are Fuji, SONY, Verbatim or another quality brand.
If you don't know "bad" from "good" CD-R's, go to:
http://www.cdfreaks.com
where there are thousands of discussions and links to lists of garbage vs. good CD-R's.
OK, assuming that you used good media....
Perhaps there is some discrepancy in the way that your friend's CD-RW drive wrote tracks vs the way yours reads them.
One way to possibly fix this is:
Make a 2nd copy of these CD-R's (yes I know that takes time) on your CD-RW drive or on a third machine (a desktop CD burner perhaps).
Doing this will reveal several things:
If the copy process "craps out" on your CD-R drive copying one or more discs, then you know that either one or more of the discs is bad, or that your drive "disagrees" with the disc.
If that happens, go to a desktop with a known good CD burner, and try to copy them again.
If you get a good copy, try the copies on your Thinkpad to see if they work.
If that fails...CALL IBM AND PAY FOR A SET OF DISCS!!
Wow....that was wordy!!!!

It's IBM's responsibility to provide you with a functioning computer during the warranty period. Tell them your computer doesnt work (!) If they don't send you the disks for free, escalate the problem until someone does!

My assumption was that he was out of warranty, or would not have been trying the method that he tried.
