Newbie here about to purchase the T42 2379R1U Model

#1 Post by baldyguy » Sat Apr 16, 2005 1:38 am

Hello everyone,

Just wanted to let you know that you guys rock! Thank you Bill for having such a great site.. anyways...

I have a buddy who works for IBM, and he said through his EPP he can get me the T42, 2379R1U. This cost for this $1099.00 including shipping. Is this good? There's also another one w/out the finger print security option for $100.00 less.

I don't know how good the 32MB ATI Mobility RADEON 7500 video card is when it comes to playing games. Can I get some input on this?

I want to be able to upgrade the RAM, I want to go up to 1GB. Is there any good RAM that supports this laptop? I don't want any cheap type of RAM. I'm willing to pay good money, but I don't really have to buy the most expensive one. Just one that is good for the money.

I currently inherited an IBM A21e from someone, and i'm selling this laptop to get the T42... Thank you guys in advance!

The 2379-R1U is a good workhorse machine. $1099 is an excellent price, considering that the IBM list price is close to $1500 and considering that you are getting a 3-year warranty.

The Radeon 7500 isn't that great for games, but it can do some 3D stuff. My own ThinkPad has the 7500, and it gets about 3800 in 3DMark2001SE. I would say that it is adequate for First Person Shooter games through the 2001 era (like Max Payne). It can handle 3D RTS games like WarCraft III as well.

I always recommend Crucial so-Dimms for memory. I've used Crucial products for many years and have never had a problem.

Can anyone else give me some feedback about this laptop? I'm really tempted to get it... Is there any reason why I shouldn't get it? This is going to be my first lappy.

At that price I'd get it and spend $150 on beefing up the memory to at least 768MB.

My TP has about the same specs. For gaming the Radeon 7500 is not the best video card, but still handles games like Half-life 2 (my favorite game).

Anyway, if you have a chance, get a a price for a T42 with ATI Radeon 9600 64Mb. That will definitely handle your game needs.

I you are willing to spend a little more money you might want to consider the 2373M3U. It is going for $1494 on the EPP site which is around $800 off retail. It not much more than the $1099 one, but has a lot more features!!

I didn't see that one! Where can I get that one? Is it too late for me to cancel my order? I made it around 1pm yesterday...

Oh and they left out the fingerprint reader on the description i posted. Also the HD is a 7200rpm version not a 5400.

After using this laptop over the weekend, I'm not too happy with the 2379R1U Model. I currently have a 20 inch DELL LCD, and the resolution is set at 1600x1200. I'm so used it to it and when I use my thinkpad, it's 1024 x 768. So how can I go about exchanging it or returning it? I have only had this for two weeks now.

JohnV,

I'm looking on the EPP website and I don't see anything for that model? DO I have to customize it?

Exactly where is it?
