T400 and HSPA mPCI whitelist modem (BIOS modded)

#1 Post by JAJO » Thu Mar 22, 2012 12:49 pm

Hello,

Do U have any idea how to recognize a modem installed in mPCI slot?
I can't find it in my Windows 7 x64 Device Manager and think it doesn't recognize the modem.

I have used this modded bios http://forums.mydigitallife.info/thread ... post544727
The error 1804 vanished, there is no problem with it, but Windows don't see my mPCI HSPA modem (Samsuns GT-Y3300).

Is there any help for me?

Tape Pin-20:

Windows cannot see the device because the BIOS is turning it off at bootup. [Taping Pin-20 will prevent the device being turned off by the BIOS, but it also means that you may not be able to power it off via the switch ... but that may be less important than being able to use the device!]

Is this necessary? I thought that modded bios will remove that problem too.

If the card is not seen, then it is necessary at least to test the hypothesis! [I do not know if your specific modded BIOS removes the Pin-20 problem. I suspect that it does not.]

A modified BIOS which removes the Pin-20 problem does not exist for any of the recent Thinkpads ... at least not yet (as far as I know)!

Pin-20 is one side only!

Remove the tape from the other side and try again. [I don't know if that is the reason for your problem -- probably not! -- but you have taped another pin in addition to Pin-20, and you might as well correct the taping problem, and then reassess the situation.]

Well, you have the same problem I have seen on a different platform (X200) and a different card (Gobi 3000). Although the X200 had a modified BIOS, it was impossible to get Windows to "see" the card. Taping Pin-20 did not help.

Perhaps a new thread on this subject will generate a solution. It appears that some non-whitelistedd WWAN cards, on multiple Thinkpad platforms (e.g., T400, X200, etc.) remain "invisible" even after taping Pin-20 + using a modified BIOS. It would be great if someone could offer a solution!

Lenovo disqualify my T400 from using HSPA+ 900 MHz class 10 modem cause all of whitelisted don't supports it. This is a real dicrimination!

You can always use an external USB device!

You can blame the various national regulatory authourities for the whitelists of internal wireless devices on business grade laptops, there's no point getting upset at manufacturers about it

Of'course, I can use USB modem but then built-in antena and sim card slot become useless. O_o

If this is not a manufacturer regulation, why in PC I can put any WLAN card in PCI-E/PCI slot?
Is there any way to change those regulations?

Because a PC is not a mobile device....... but good luck on finding any PCI (etc) WLAN cards anyway.

BTW: Lenovo supports 3G WWAN modems but for the newer machines: http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloa ... D=DS001273 - Ericsson F5521gw and Qualcomm Gobi3000

Why they don't add those modems to whitelist in T400?
It should be easy, I think so.
