100Gb @ 7200 rpm: will com out soon?

#1 Post by Cecilia76 » Sat Apr 16, 2005 2:39 am

In some rumors (I don't remember where),

I read sometimes ago that on next May we will have the 100 Gb @ 7200 rpm. Does anyone have more info on it?

I would like to know the power need of the toy and and have a look to the noise tests...

They should be released together, as to the news I read.

Hitachi in the last few months released a lot of other hard drives (both 1.8" and 3.5" form factors), with dramatically increased data densities.

Hopefully the new 7K100 will enjoy this too, in the form of reduced number of internal platters (save power?).

I'm speculating that Hitachi is waiting for Seagate to release their version of 7K100 before releasing theirs.

First, Hitachi should release any 100GB drive (4.2/5.4)...in stores, not only on paper.

The 5k100 at 100GB has been a paper launch,
while the Seagate 5400.2 100GB has been available for many months....

Well, seagate just announced (today) a 7200RPM 100GB notebook drive. Looking at specs, it is very similar performance-wise to the 7K60 (access times and transfer speeds) just with 40 additional GBs!.
By the way, also a 120GB 5400 RPM drive was announced.

Now just guess when will these be available!

We've got a Seagate 100GB 7200RPM on the way to our labs (LaptopLogic that is, see my sig). I'll post when we have a review up :) Along with the T43 that arrived at my doorstep last week :)
Have used just about every ThinkPad since the T42 days...
