Checkered display during boot: How to fix

The T42p (ATI Mobility Fire GL T2) displays garbled graphics (checkerboard of random boxes, even during boot)
How to fix this?
Get a space system board (Fru : 93P4159)? Have the GPU re-soldered? ...
Any reputable businesses?

All,
If I were to replace the motherboard, what about the system identity? What does that change mean to installed Windows software?
What are your experiences?

It can all be addressed accordingly. Windows couldn't care less if you have an IBM factory pre-load...
