T42 still giving fan error after replacement
T42 still giving fan error after replacement
I have a T42 that is still giving me a fan error after replacement of the original. I ordered and installed a 2nd replacement fan, which still didn't solve the problem. In order to verify that the fans weren't DOA, I swapped them out in a different T42, and they both worked. Any clue as to what might be causing this issue?

Get a multimeter with some very fine probes (or use needles or similar), and check if there is power (+5VDC) on the fan-connector from the motherboard.
Measure with the fan plugged in, on top of the fan-plug.
Red = plus, Blue or Black = minus, Orange = rev-sensor (don't measure).

There is a fuse (F4 if I remember) under the corner of the fan closest to the wireless slot.

Welcome to the forums!
For fuse locations download the how to sheet in my sig, and then the T4x fuses locations doc.
The most likely culprit is F4 blown - not an uncommon fault.

I have replaced 2 fans on T42s, make sure to run the laptop and WATCH the fan spinning before you close the laptop back up. In some cases the fans (like hard drives) won't spin-up, so return it to the seller. And make sure to use a good thermal paste atop the graphics chip, something like arctic silver or even toothpaste makes a good thermal paste.

You're kidding, right?systemBuilder wrote:Ieven toothpaste makes a good thermal paste.
Please do not post this type of misinformation. Thermal paste is not illegal yet, and is still quite affordable.
Save the toothpaste for its designed use.

Oh I don't know George - if nothing else that multicoloured stripey toothpaste will look very pretty on the heatsink, and the overheating CPU will release those delicate minty fragrances around the room.Save the toothpaste for its designed use.
I think we have a new use for thinkpads as Room Fragrance Dispensers!
The big question is which Operating System gives out the most fragrance and can TP Fan Control be used to regulate the Fragrance levels?

Also to balance the issue, Arctic Silver (or any heatsink compound for that matter) should not be used as toothpaste, even in warm environments....
