Fingerprint reader doesnt work with Windows 8 CP? (W510)

#1 Post by pinkymadam » Tue Mar 27, 2012 5:13 am

Has anyone managed to get Thinkvantage Fingerprint Software working on Windows 8 Consumer Preview (on a W510)?

I haven't been able to get the software to work on both a clean install and an upgrade. I've also made sure I have the most recent version, have restarted, cleaned/uninstalled previous drivers etc.

Having said this, the fingerprint reader is working through automatic driver installation in Windows 8, and I can record the fingerprints via biometric devices in control panel, but the additional options are missing -- things like using prints to power on (and more importantly, in the place of boot and hard drive passwords). The software/dialog is not the Thingvantage one and there aren't any of the additional options (only fingerprint profiles).

Any advice would be appreciated.

That's how it's supposed to work.

Windows only does logons; you have to install that software to make it do the other stuff (personally, I prefer not to as there's an annoying grammatical error in the message it displays, but that makes it inconsistent as to when I can and cannot log on using a fingerprint).
W520 (i7-2720M, Quadro 1000M), T41, 600E
Just say no to the ThinkBook Pro.

I think my first post was a little unclear (now edited), but I know -- it's the extra stuff in Thinkvantage software I'm missing. I'd really like to use boot and hard drive passwords like I used to, but it adds precious time if I can't use fingerprints (I reset them -- they're retained after a new OS is installed, and you can power on etc. with the fingerprint reader, but it doesn't log into Windows automatically. I cleaned up in the hope that zero fingerprint drivers and history would allow Thinkvantage software to be installed).

So far, it's only certain Thinkvantage software that hasn't worked in Windows 8 (Windows 7 x64 versions of everything else work fine -- if not at first, then via compatibility options)..

Fingerprint software doesn't work in Windows 8.
After several reinstall of different builds of the software I finally got the new BSOD for Windows 8. I'll give it to them, the new BSOD isn't as menacing as the old one, it now has a smiling face on it and a mellow blue tint with some basic UI.
Regardless I can't use a Think pad with no fingerprint so I'm through with Win 8 for now.

It does for me. UPEK Drivers and basic software (via Control Panel) are installed automatically. Have you tried uninstalling all fingerprint software and the device? Then either find the device and automatically find drivers via Device Manager, if it doesn't do so itself.
Apologies for being too lazy (or tired) to check, but is it the same device on a W520?

I never got the BSOD, only some other message from Thinkvantage Fingerprint Software when it failed to load properly.

Yes the fingerprint chip works, but thinkvantage software that controls the chip doesn't work. So what's the point? Without the software loading properly the chip is useless.
I had the same problem, fingrrprints software fails to load at startup.
What I did is I kept installing older versions of the software, after about four different installs I got the new and improved happy face of dead.
Keep different builds of the fingerprint software andyoull see what I mean.

Not what I meant -- the drivers install automatically, along with basic fingerprint software (just finger enrolment is possible, for me. I can use fingerprints to log in, after Windows has booted, but not pre-boot.

Yes, the pre-boot bios Login doesn't work.
I wasn't able to get it work either.
