i couldnt find a thread on replacing lcds.. has one been done here?

No, but it is extremely expensive.

i found a couple on ebay for $300 shipped.. do you know where I can find directions on how to do it?

Contains full instructions for complete disassembly.

one thing, can I go from xga to sxga with just the lcd? or do I have to replace the inverter panel as well?

Do you mean SXGA or SXGA+ ? Big difference. To the best of my knowledge, IBM doesn't have any SXGA models, just SXGA+ ones.

It is unlikely that going from xga to sxga+ will work. The inverter and lcd cable between the MB and inverter could be different. It would be best if you want to change resolutions to get the entire package, that would be display, inverter and lcd cable. Even that is not a 100% guarantee that it will work.

Having just disassembled and reassembled a T22, I want to point out that while the Hardware manuals tell what screws to remove and give general instructions for taking stuff apart and putting it back together, they are not detailed guides at all. For example, none of the manipulation required to "unsnap" the various pieces in removing the hinge cover, keyboard bezel & LCD cover bezel, is described.

For example, to remove the LCD cover bezel, you first have to pull up the bottom edge away from the adhesive strip, then release the side catches by pulling the side pieces towards the bottom and then pulling up, catch by catch, and then similarly for the top side. It can be a little unnerving to figure this out by yourself, since the pieces are very tightly put together, and there's a fear of snapping off the tabs if you apply too much force in the wrong way.

I have lots of experience taking all kinds of stuff apart, have run across lots of different types of clamshell latches, but I found it quite stressful because of the "feeling your way" aspect and my attachment to the Thinkpad. I definitely do not recommend this for the novice. . . .

The HMMs are written for use by technicians certified on and with prior experience of Thinkpads, not owners.

Certainly they're not for use by clueless dilletantes, you have to have some level of comfort with working under the hood in tight quarters.

Just consider working under the hood of your Thinkpad without an HMM!

more than just the LCD panel will need to be changed..

i tried swapping the entire top on a 760 once and found all was fine until i tried to plug the newer one into the system board..
different socket..
i.e. keyed so as to prevent swapping..

in other words it looks to me to be wasted $$ to buy, on ebay, a panel for $300 and expect that it will just bolt up and work..

not likely..

about as likely as flipping a coin and having it land on heads 20 times in a row..
