W520 and Ramaxel RAM memory not compatible?
W520 and Ramaxel RAM memory not compatible?
Hi all
Installed on my W520 I have 1x4GB Hynix memory HMT351S6CFR8C-H9
http://www.hynix.com/products/computing ... 351S6CFR8C
I bought 2x2GB DIMM modules of Ramaxel PC3-10600S
part number is RMT1970ED48E8F-1333
this should be the specs page: http://ramaxel.com/eng_Products.aspx?Cl ... 46%2c77%2c
If I install all of three modules, Bios and Windows 7 64bit does not see new modules, but Speccy (http://www.piriform.com/speccy) does,
If i leave only new modules, the laptop does not boot
Ram specs seems to be identical: is there any reason why the system does not see correctly this memory??
thanks

this is the speccy screen:

Re: W520 and Ramaxel RAM memory not compatible?
The real question is why would you waste time putting 2x2gb on a w520?
The w520 is one of the few 15" laptops that support 32, so why go any lower.

DarkoDDio - welcome to the forum!
make sure you're installing memory in the correct slots and matching the pair together. you'll want the ramaxel memory in slots 0 and 1 so they're paired, then the hynix in slot 2.
this KB on the lenovo forum shows which slots to use:
http://forum.lenovo.com/t5/W-Series-Thi ... a-p/249257
(even though this article covers a W510, the W520 uses the same memory installation order)
it's possible that the ramaxel isn't compatible but i'd try the above installation order first.

Kaze22: simply because my friend has these available after removing them from a HP laptop
erik: I found the "Optimizing memory" thread a little bit after I wrote this post and I win 50%
I am assuming DIMM slots 0 and 2 are under keyboard and slots 1 and 3 are on the bottom of the laptop.
I tried these configurations:
Slot0:4GB = 4GB (original config)
Slot1:4GB = 4GB
Slot2:4GB = 4GB
Slot0:2GB = don't boot
Slot0:2GB + Slot2:4GB = 6GB
Slot0:4GB + Slot2:2GB = 6GB
Slot0:2GB + Slot1:2GB = don't boot
Slot0:2GB + Slot2:2GB = don't boot
Slot1:2GB + Slot2:2GB = don't boot
Slot1:2GB + Slot3:2GB = don't boot
Slot0:2GB + Slot1:2GB + Slot2:4GB = 6GB (your suggestion)
Slot1:4GB + Slot2:2GB = 4GB
I don't see any way to work with only 2GB modules
I don't see any way to boot with 8GB
any other suggestion?

others configurations I tried:
Slot0:2GB + Slot3:4GB = 4GB
Slot0:2GB + Slot1:4GB = 4GB
Slot0:2GB + Slot3:4GB = 4GB
Slot0:2GB + Slot1:2GB + Slot3:4GB = 6GB
Slot1:2GB + Slot3:4GB = 6GB
I am REALLY confused!!!!

Re: W520 and Ramaxel RAM memory not compatible?
purchase different memory.DarkoDDio wrote:any other suggestion?
given what you've tried and the results you're seeing, i can't help but question the ramaxel modules.

Re: W520 and Ramaxel RAM memory not compatible?
I would have gone with 2 x 4GB instead, use them, keep the original 4GB in the draw.
Or, if I knew I wanted 8GB in the first place, would have gone with 2 x 4GB from Lenovo directly.
Basically, when it comes to memory, either get them directly from Lenovo during system configuration (if not too expensive), or get 3rd party exact pairs...and don't mix.
That's my practice.
