Thanks to the many helpful opinions on this site and others, and after a lot of shopping I ordered the thinkpad T43. Here's the specs

1.8 Mhz
512 DDRII PC4200
60 GB 5400 RPM HDD
15" SXGA flexview
Multi-burner
3-year warranty
Mini-dock

This is all that I thought important to me as I do not do gaming, and mainly will use it for internet (dial-up), Excel, powerpoint, word, outlook, some image and video storage and manipulation, mostly of my new Baby Girl, it has wireless a/b/g, (I have no idea what that means really) and the graphics are probably good enough for what I'm doing.

The reason I went with IBMmm is mostly my experience with a G41 at work. It had not one crash, battery lasted over two hours, it was solid, great keyboard feel, fast processor and multi-tasked well. The Heft of it I got used to but only took it from the car to the office and home again.
I've had two ohter notebooks; Sony and Panasonic...both are dead after three years. The Screen on the Sony and the Motherboard on the Panasonic (two weeks after the warranty expired).

The only other unit I considered seriously was the 15" Powerbook. Price decided for me. Even with my student discount the PB was $300 semolians more, plus the software that I would need (already have MS office) the memory upgrade that is nec. with apple's added another $150, plus the DVD burner added another $150 or so...It was a no brainer for me.

I look forward to getting the unit on the 21st, it was ordered on the 14th. When the promo of the Mini-dock is thrown in at $49 it's even sweeter.

The price of a similarly equipped T42 series was considerably higher on the web...this I don't get. IBM gave me the option of a 14" for $50 less.
