ThinkPad T520 Screen Temperature

#1 Post by mcharl02 » Mon Apr 02, 2012 10:22 am

Hello,

I apologize if this is an issue already answered- I couldnt seem to find a good search function for this forum.

I purchased a T520 ThinkPad in November and have used it without trouble until now. Over the past week, I have discovered that the bottom right corner of my screen is getting hot. I first thought to touch that part when it seemed to me that there was a slightly darker spot on a white screen I had up at the time.

I did some research and heard this was a problem with the backlight or some of the wiring in laptops. (Is this related to my problem? http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=88991)

However, one variable is that in the past week I've started to use an external monitor. So it is a dual monitor "extended" screen setup. I'm not sure if this would have any effect. I don't know how long I have had this "hot screen" problem- it may just be a coincidence that I discovered this problem within a few days of starting to use a dual screen setup.

What are my options?

My laptop is under warranty still, but I use it for work and would really not want to lose it for weeks and weeks (unless Lenovo is very fast with these kinds of repairs).

In my research, I've seen people fix this problem themselves. Is there a way I could do that WITHOUT voiding the warranty? I'm not a complete novice, but my experience is pretty much limited to cleaning components, installing RAM and video cards- nothing with wiring.

And, in the meantime, should I absolutely not use my laptop screen (i.e. switch to just my external monitor) to reduce the chance of further damage? I've noticed that the temperature is not always consistent- I've flipped my monitor open and closed a few times ( in case this is some faulty wiring), but I can't say for sure that has made a difference.

I'm going to try and disconnect my 2nd screen completely for the entire workday today and maybe tomorrow and see if the problem crops up.

Thank you
