I don't need significant storage, so a 16GB part would suffice, but I'd appreciate any advice on which brand(s) to choose, or avoid.
Thanks.

Re: SSD Recommendations for X31?
Since you're looking for an IDE SSD, the choice is somewhat limited.
If you just want to run Linux, an IDE-to-CF adapter plus a large CF card should be suffice. Especially if you plan to run Puppy Linux on it.
For real 2.5 inch IDE SSDs: Generally, Kingspec SSDs (mostly found on eBay) seem to get bad reviews for reliability. Transcend IDE SSDs are said to be terribly slow. Haven't heard much about other brands of 2.5 inch IDE SSDs.
I have a Super Talent DuraDrive series 1.8 inch ZIF SSD in my X41 tablet, and it performs quite nicely. So I assume their 2.5 inch DuraDrive line should also be a good choice.
Alternatively, you may be able to use a smaller form factor drive (1.8 inch ZIF, MicroSATA, mSATA, etc.) plus an adapter. See these notebookreview.com posts:

Puppy runs nicely from $4-5 USB Flash Memory Sticks, though some behave better than others - some convince the bios they're a real HD, others put you through the 90-second "missing drive" timeout before allowing boot. I'm using Lucid 5.2.5, it seems to be happier on the X31 than 5.2.8, has some issues with the WiFi driver, savefile and storage, but most are resolvable.
Only Windows demands an actual "C" drive, so that's why I'm looking at SSD.
Any advice on 2.5 IDE -> SDHC adapters?
There are a variety listed on Ebay, but no reputable firm seems to be selling them.
I would prefer to use SDHC instead of CF, since the cards are cheaper and reusable in cameras.

Re: SSD Recommendations for X31?
I don't have any personal experience with IDE-SD adapters, but have a look at this:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/solid-s ... pters.html
Apparently the controller chips you can find in these adapters are pretty slow.
I would get a real SSD:

They don't mention Super Talent SSDs, but if Super Talent uses the same controller in their 2.5 and 1.8-inch IDE drives, they will have pretty good performance.
