More info regarding the new user desktop on Windows 8...

Apple's iPhone may no longer be the market leader this time next year -- at least if Microsoft has its way. Microsoft is re-thinking how people interact with their traditional computers, tablets, and smartphones as demonstrated in the new design of their user desktop in their next release of Windows 8. The traditional mouse will be replaced by a device similar to Microsoft's Xbox Kinect.

The demo in the Youtube video gives the impression that Xbox Kinect will be utilized as a voice-controlled device. In reality, the Xbox Kinect version for Windows PC(s) is already available in stores as a motion-controlled device. The major difference between the PC and Xbox versions is "Near Mode" functionality, that is, the ability to recognize movement of your hand at very short distances.

Question: Are computer users ready to give-up their mice for a device that recogizes gestures (e.g. grab, move, and release) made by their hands?


As a side note, Microsoft is working together with Ford and Viper (auto security)...
