Need folder security program
Need folder security program
I have the need to password protect a data folder.
I'm running XP Pro on a home network (2 computers connected to a router).
The program I'm looking for will require a password to be entered to access the folder -- but I want it to be transparent, e.g., I want to be able to open Word or Photoshop and to navigate to the folder using the File Open command, but to have a password dialog pop up when I try to open the folder. Once I'm in the folder, I want to be open any file or group of files without further prompts, and to be able to open subfolders without further prompts. Same trying to get into the folder using Windows Explorer.
The folder must be visible and accessible across the network, but require the password for access.
Any suggestions? Thanks.

Check out "File Protector" at http://www.mikkotech.com/fp2000.html
I use an older version of this same software and it works great. You have to enable the folder first (with your password) and then you can access it and all the files in it (at least that's the way the program I have works...I'm still using the year 2000 version). It seems that the newer version has more flexibility and emphasizes "safety" from viruses, etc., but the foundation of the program is to hide and make inaccessable files and folders from others. Anyway, let us know what you find.

Thank you, Simple File Sharing was the problem, once that was off, it was easy to set permissions for my personal user account.jdhurst wrote:In XP, make sure you have turned off Simple File Sharing. From there, right click on the folder and assign permissions under security. Also, you need to be sure both machines have user log on passwords. Then it works the same way as in Windows 2000. ...
