T60 Data Transfer to an SSD

Hello,

I am going to install an SSD by Crucial into my T60.

I purchased the Apricorn kit with EZ Gig and SATA to usb cable.

In their FAQ section it says to set the securtity chip to disabled and to disable the "Pre DESKTOP Area" When I go to the bios it gives me warnings that once disabled you can't get it back without a complete restore form OEM disks.

So I do this? What am I loosing that I can't get back? Should I care?

As I recall, the warning is there to notify you that if you allow the partition to be seen, it is possible to erase or remove it and it can only be replaced by reinstall media.

The reason to make it visible is to clone it for future use, though the liklihood of having the drivers you need to reinstall onto the SSD may not be high, depending on the age of the partition - and it likely came into existence before SSD drives and all the appropriate drivers were around.

That said, I have no experience installing or performing a recovery to an SSD.


But again, the warning should be to indicate it is now POSSIBLE to damage the recovery partition and not that you are actually removing it - assuming you are in BIOS and allowing access to the secure zone or whatever it is called.

The T60 forum might be more help.
