Removal of unnecessary devices?

I am having a blast “sharpening my sword” so to speak with this new to me X60.

4GB RAM and a 120GB Mushkin Chronos SSD has this thing running way faster than I ever anticipated (cut .

I installed Debian Squeeze last night when the SSD came, but forgot to enable AHCI, so I am going to go ahead and re-install the OS tonight and try to minimalize the footprint even further.

So now my question is would I receive any benefit at all from removing (rather than disabling) devices I do not use (Bluetooth, WAN Card, Modem). I know they really do not add weight, but do they draw any power at all if hidden?

Also, count me as the umpteenth person looking for links to update their BIOS. If anyone can point me in the right direction, it would be greatly appreciated.

Well, I don't have an answer for your main question, but there's no need to reinstall Debian just to enable AHCI. Linux doesn't freak out nearly as much as Windows.

If you would like to use Lenovo's official BIOS, use this guide for updating: http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/BIOS_Upgr ... ux_for_X61 It doesn't work for modded BIOS, because the image file name/format is a little bit different.

Nice! This is very good to hear. I actually want to re-install to get my footprint down as well. I was only half paying attention when I installed and added in more stuff than I wanted. The theme here is lean and mean

From what I am hearing, a modded BIOS would be my aim so I can utilize a different wifi card to cut down on heat.

I wouldn't think you'd get much more out of removing devices than disabling. Once the OS isn't looking for them, and the bios won't even acknowledge them, they won't really be hurting anything more than the weight of them.
