What is the maximum resoloution for X220 with MiniDock Plus

#1 Post by hyde » Fri Apr 20, 2012 10:31 pm

I have this dock: http://shop.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/cont ... lsTabsArea

And if possible I would like to use the largest possible monitor (probably 24") that I can afford.
What is the maximum resolution that users are getting with X220 running a standard intel graphics chip and the dock.

It looks like the dock has a limit of 1920x1200 with DVI's or 2560x1600 with DisplayPort, but then states using DisplayPort monitor cable reduces it to 1920x1200. How else can display ports be used?

Additionally, I am more interested in the maximum resolution X220 can run without causing any strain to system performance, rather than maximum supported resolutions reported on the Mini Dock Plus Series 3. With the displays nowadays, you are stuck with their native resolutions, so I need to make sure before buying one.

The older docks supported dual link DVI up to 2560x1600, so it will surprise me if the new ones don't. But who knows...

In any case, if you really get a 24" monitor, then I don't know of anyone with higher resolution than 1920x1200, so it probably won't matter anyways.

If you are talking about general desktop applications (not 3D rendering), then you will have absolutely no impact on performance, no matter how high the resolution is (the monitors will limit you way before the GPU will).

Thanks Dr.

I was very surprised, you are right, almost all 24"s out there are 1920x1080. I thought it would be standard for them all to be 1920x1200 or even higher. Strange. I have to now check if my current 20" is 1920x1080, otherwise, it is not much of an upgrade, except things looking larger and maybe a bit sharper.

I am going to check some monitors, thanks again for your input.
