ACPI stability in XP in comparison to W2K - better or not?

this question is related to my other enigma about APIC on T22 systems.

i was asking myself if the ACPI-handling in XP is at least slightly better then in W2K. in the case some users here can tell me their experiences I would upgrade my T22.

On a ThinkPad with ACPI certified for Windows 2000, ACPI works fine.
On a ThinkPad with ACPI certified for Windows XP, ACPI works fine.
On any ThinkPad, check your support page:
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... country=us
and see if it provides XP drivers. Also see if there are any caveats for XP upgrades.

Some early ThinkPads that came with Windows 98 but were Windows 2000 certified as well, or came with Windows 2000 (such as the ThinkPad 240 series) did not work well with XP and power management was one of the issues. I think your T22 should be OK.

On converting to XP:
1. It is newer and better than Windows 2000 (although Windows 2000 is very good).
2. XP Home is junk (godforsaken, useless junk) because it does not support proper file sharing. Only use XP Pro. (I have used both and my judgement is based on using both - YMMV)
3. Do a clean install, that is, format and start again. This does NOT mean omitting IBM tools. If there are XP recovery disks for your model, and you can purchase them, I would do so.
4. There is no reason not to use XP Pro on a certified machine, and no reason not to upgrade to SP2 plus all patches.
5. There is no reason not to use most of the IBM Tools. Access Connections is an excellent problem if you have an IBM wireless card. Not needed for wired connections only.
6. Upgrade BIOS and EC.

ok, thank you a lot. the tip with XP Pro is apreciated a lot!

I have ressource conflicts WHATEVER I do, even devices I switch off in the BIOS are getting and IRQ nevertheless ...

a lot of people are convinced that IRQ-sharing works fine but these must be people running office software only. as soon as you do some workstation stuff like audio-mixing it gets tricky. the audio-card should have an own IRQ.

I am also convinced ACPI-certified does not mean much if there is no APIC on the CPU, like on my 900MHz PIII coppermine... APIC enables those extra IRQs that are needed for smooth workstation vibes..

it seems I will upgrade to XP pro and enable ACPI again. it might run more smooth.. worth a try anyway.
