Skinning a Lid with Non-Skin Material

I read somewhere but can't find it now where instead of using a laptop skin, someone recommended leather-look padded shelf liner from Lowes. Real skin material sticks and can be removed and re-stuck. How would one stick the leather-look shelf liner?
