Booting Ubuntu from ExpressCard SSD on an X201?

I have an X201 and am considering getting an ExpressCard SSD. Replacing my 750GB spinning drive is too an expensive an option. Would the ExpressCard be an option and assuming I put everything but \home on it, would I see viable performance improvements? Can't seem to get a straight answer on whether I could boot from it.
