Seagate Momentus 7K100 Officially Launched

Seagate Momentus 7K100 Officially Launched
(Also Momentus 5K120)

http://www.seagate.com/cda/products/dis ... 69,00.html
http://www.seagate.com/cda/newsinfo/new ... 95,00.html

I for one is going to wait for technical reviews on Hitachi's 7K60 vs. Seagate's 7K100, and if good & available in Hong Kong then I'll buy it for my T42s.

Just simply sick of Hitachi's paper launches (eg: 5K100) which is *still* not available in HK.

If anybody finds a place to order one in the U.S., please post!

Looks like Seagate spent last two months improving the 7K100 HDD idle power consumption...

A draft Momentus 7K100 data spec sheet I got 2 mths ago showed it was 1.3W, but now the final release version showed HDD idle time of 0.95W.

It will be interesting to see if Hitachi can better these specs...

I didn't ask the price, but inquired about the timeframe. The reply:

Hi DoS,

Thanks for writing! The ST910021A will be available to the channel in May
and make its way to retailers such as Fry's Electronics in the June
timeframe. Here's a link to a list of other authorized Seagate retailers:

Thanks again, and best regards,

Looks like the numbers on the Seagate are competitive with the Hitachi, but I'm going to wait for the benchmarks to come in first. Still, it's good to see competition in the 7200RPM notebook drive market. This might make things affordable to those of us who are still stuck in 4200RPM land!

If you take a closer look at Hitachi's HDD power consumptoins by drive model, you will notice this:

A) Almost same power consumption:
Hitachi Travelstar 7K60 (almost same as 5K80)
Hitachi Travelstar 5K80 (almost same as 7K60)
Seagate Momentus 7K100

B) BUT if you look at Hitachi's next generation HDD:
Hitachi Travelstar 5K100 ==> significantly better power consumption

So It would be very intersting to see what Hitachi's Travelstar 7K100 power consumtion would be (I predict it would be close to 5K100's).
Hence, *perhaps* Hitachi's 7K100 may use less battery power than Seagate's 7K100.

But of course, if Hitachi pulls a rabbit and turns it into 7K120,
then it'll be much different ;)

Hi,

Regarding power consumption, I'd say the difference is nowadays very low. When I switched my original's T40 40GNX (5400RPM) hdd to the current 7K60 I couldn't notice an increase in battery usage... The thing lasted before 4 hours and was still 4 hours after the swap with a full battery. This is probably due to the fact that when on battery, notebook drives are normally in 'idle mode' and power consumption is already very nimble compared to other parts of the thinkpad, plus the fact that a difference of 0.6-0.8 watts working (which only happens during seeks between 7200 and 4200 disks) would *only* reduce 4-5 minutes of a standard (47wh) battery.

In summary, I would not worry too much about power consumption of these models... as long as they do not state in specs much higher numbers than currently.
760CD -> 770X -> 600E -> T23 -> T40 -> T42 -> T400 -> T430

Hey all,
I will have one of the new 7200.1 Momentus 100GB 7200RPM drives on its way to me soon courtesy of Seagate. I also have a new T43 in my posession courtesy of IBM. I believe I will use the T43 to test the Seagate model, but I'm not entirely sure. It also might go to another member of our staff who is doing a Hard Drive RPM article.
There will be a First Impression of the T43 up at the end of the week and I will let you guys know about the Seagate review when I know.

edit: See the link in my sig

I'm gonna threadjack a little here and ask this question about your site. You compare a mediocre T42 model with Dell laptop that has better specs. How is this a good review? It seems to me that if you compare a T42 which has a speed of 1.7 and Radeon 7500 with 32MB, then at the very least, your dell or other comparison should have a CPU speed of 1.7 and a Radeon 7500. Also, your thinkpad has a 6-cell battery when the dell has a 9-cell. Shouldn't both batteries have the same number of cells? It's no wonder your review shows the dell as having far better battery life. Then you call the Thinkpad's battery life mediocre. That's true because you're using a mediocre battery. Gimme the funds and time and I could come up with a better, more accurate, and fair review.

Those were some very early reviews when the site was launched, when models reviewed were pretty much what the staff had on hand. I joined after that point and since then we have gotten manufacturer's to send us models and purchased a number of laptops for reviews. As we build our repertoire of laptops we will be able to use them in comparisons for benchmarks in our future tests. :) But you do have a very good point. If you see that in any of our latest benchmarks, feel free to PM or e-mail me. Thanks!
