Just got a T61p and i need help upgrading it

#1 Post by PaulG1488 » Thu May 03, 2012 1:24 am

Hello everyone I am new here and just got a T61p (64575KU)

I been reading about all the great upgrades people have been making to their t61p's. However I noticed that I havent seen one with my product id and I was wondering if mine is capable of doing some of these upgrades such as a t9300, 8 gb ram, ssd drives or any other good things.
If possible can you please include certail models or specs or if you can direct me to links to buy some of this stuff it would be great. I just want to make sure I'm buying the right stuff.

I plan on using mine for audio production so if anyone has any advice to spice my t61p up it would be greatly appreciated.

I don't think there's anything specific to your model number. You'll need 8GB of DDR2 PC5300 memory. You can use any 2.5" SSD in the main bay, but you'll need Middleton's BIOS hack to get full SATA II speeds. Then pick up the modular caddy to use with a large 5400RPM platter drive for storage. Since your machine came with the T7700 upgrading to the T9300 may cause an error message, but I believe this can be fixed with Middleton's BIOS hack as well.

To learn about your starting point...

Use your T61's Machine Type and Model (nnnn_xxx, e.g. 4384_2MU)
to determine its specs...

Use its serial number
to determine whether it has Penryn CPU compatible motherboard

This is not a deal breaker, because you can get around the "Thermal Sensing Error" message (caused when placing a Penryn CPU on a Merom motherboard) with a "modified" bios update.

before you dump too much money, check the build date on your t61p. hopefully it is built around 08/08 or else you may have a graphic card waiting to fail.

All T61 motherboards are available (at a price... some of them are getting scarce) in 2 versions: one with nVidia and one with Intel graphics (except there is no T61p with Intel GPU).
They are interchangeable. Only if you go from Intel to nVidia do you need a different fan (nVidia fan works on Intel).
Should yours fail, you could replace it with a same-size Intel mobo (which is lower power than your nVidia).
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)
