I bought my T410 from lenovo with an i7 CPU. I'm not sure if the fan/heatsink is the same or different between the two CPUs. You can check the Hardware Maintenance Manual.

Dear rychuu,

I have a t410i that I bought from a user named underclocker.

He replaced the i3 cpu with a i5-450m. My model is a 2516-bec.

At some point I would like to replace the i5 with an i7.

You can send underclocker a private message if you want to, he is a great guy.

Good luck and let use know how you make out with your project.

While possible, would recommend that you add an SSD first if you don't already have one as it's likely to give you more bang for the buck than a processor upgrade would... the jump from 2.4 -> 2.66ghz and additional 1mb of cache (and slightly higher turbo boost from the i5->i7) is likely to be not noticeable most of the time.

Definitely good advice. It may be measurably faster with a higher level processor, but not noticeably faster.

Ah - 4 cores - that's a little bit of a different discussion. The Core i7 620m mentioned above is 35 watt and compatible with your T410. Unfortunately, the Core i7 620m processor is a dual core, 4 thread processor (see here: http://ark.intel.com/products/43560/Int ... -2_66-GHz)). I believe the Core i7 640M was the fastest available, but it too is a dual core, 4 thread Core i7 model.

There were first generation core i7 processors that were quad core, 8 thread, but they are all 45 watt processors and I don't believe that your T410 system has the cooling capability to handle them effectively, but I may be wrong...

Either way, you'll technically void your warranty if you try a CPU swap while still covered. You'd have to try and swap the old CPU back if you needed to send it in for service and hope no one noticed. :) Good luck, let us know how you make out.

thank you for your replies

i have started to think about two things:
1. second gen of i7 - is this cpus was back-compatible? i dont know propper way....
2. warranty void - is any stickers are inside the body which can show that computer was opened? if not, replace in fault wouldnt be a problem.

thanks

Regarding the backward compatible second gen in a first gen socket, no, that's not going to work.

You would be able to do what you are suggesting - swap CPU, try it out and then swap back if you need service. Of course there is always a chance they notice something (like maybe a different color thermal compound or something) but other folks online claim to have done it successfully. Good luck.
