After repairing, parting out, upgrading, selling well over 100 T61/T61p units in the past few months I had never even seen this device... until now.

That answers my question of what the half size mini pcie slot was for, since it's rarely used. It also seems this device has a special antenna that leads on the right hinge, where all the wifi/wwan leads are on the left. I believe this is the only option that I don't have installed on my T61p yet, so now I guess I can consider the unit maxed out, it's current specs are...
T61p 08/09
X9000 2.8ghz core2extreme
8gb ram
Intel 320series 160gb SSD
Ultrabay 750gb hatachi 7200rpm
4965agn wifi
wwan antennas
sim card reader
fingerprint reader
wuxga 1920x1200
bluetooth
Not much more I can do to this after I install with wireless usb, but I'm still clueless what I can use it for. The wiki page for certified wireless usb says it works with harddrives, cameras, printers, mp3 players, etc... but I have yet to see one that supports it. I'm guessing it never really caught on. I'm also wondering about there being a problem trying to use it and bluetooth, since this LED clearplate has wusb but no bluetooth and the other has the reverse... not sure if they are made to both work on the same machine.

Very interesting!
Quite a beast you've got there...
FWIW, I have found the 5300 cards to be noticeably better (especially with throughput over distance/through walls) on the 5.2GHz band than the 4965 cards. The 6300 doesn't seem to be much better than the 5300.

Re: The elusive T61 wireless usb device (found)
My T500 has the 5350 with wimax and I can't see any improved performance over the 4965. I'm sure in the right conditions it would, but in the interest of keeping the unit as compatible as possible, I decided not to go with a non-standard wifi card. Currently this system will run on a stock bios, although with reduced harddrive speed, but if I ever get around to upgrading my router, I do have other wifi cards I can try in it, including the 5300.JeffCullen wrote:Very interesting!

Now if I can only find something to use this wusb port...
