Are T42 screens really that bad? Specifically 2379DXU..

#1 Post by BoostedA4 » Tue Apr 19, 2005 5:57 pm

After much research, I've narrowed down my final notebook decision on the 2379DXU T42 or the Asus M6/Z70 series. My uses consists of Office apps, Internet browsing, small math software, AIM, winamp. I don't plan on watching any DVD's on it and I don't game.

For its price and specs, the 2370DXU (through VISA site) seems like a great buy with everything I need. I was wondering about the 15" SXGA screen though, as many people complain about IBM screens. What are the viewing angles like? Horizontal vs vertical. Is there a color gradient from the top to the bottom? Do I need to look at it from a sweet spot? Will any impurities be insignificant given my uses for the notebook?

Thanks in advance...

I just got my 2379DXU about a week ago and I can report that, at least on my T42, the screen is brilliant--as brilliant as my Dell 2001FP--and uniform. Compared to the A30 I have been using, off-axis viewing is much improved.

I was afraid that the 1400x1050 resolution would be too small for my aging eyes, but I have to say that with the ClearType PowerToy installed, I'm perfectly happy.

I can wholeheartedly recommend this display.

The 15" SXGA+ display is a FlexView. I wouldn't worry about brightness, color reproduction or any of the things that occur on regular LCDs. I've compared my T40 (standard XGA) to my friend's T42 (15" SXGA+) and his display blows mine away.

266884U with an excellent 15" flexview. I think I could read my screen @ 180º if the bezel wasn't in the way. Very bright and crisp.

One thing I haven't seen mentioned...the 15" SXGA on my ThinkPad T42 seems to show color accurately, rather than sureally, as compared to the screens on laptops that get the celebrated reviews. Some folks seem to be disappointed with IBM's screens, but I'd say the images on the IBM screens are not "overdone".
