Is this IPS screen?

#1 Post by nycmaster » Sat May 26, 2012 11:57 am

Hello all

Can anyone tell if the screen is IPS or not by looking at spec?
Here's the spec

ThinkPad T60 (2008-UE7)
Based on 2008-CTO: T7200(2GHz), 1GB RAM, 80GB 5400rpm HD, 15in 1400x1050 LCD, 64MB ATI Radeon X1300, CDRW/DVD, Intel 802.11abg wireless, Modem, 1Gb Ethernet, UltraNav, Secure chip, Fingerprint reader, 6c Li-Ion, WinXP Pro

I'm thinking about buying this and just curious if this machine is IPS or not...

TIA!

This link covers the T60 series http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Category:T60. The only 15 inch 1400x1050 display it shows is the IPS panel. HOWEVER, I did not own this T60 model, so hopefully some one can confirm the WIKI info is correct...

All 15" T60 SXGA+ and UXGA LCDs are IPS.

Thank you folks

Just made the purchase and looking forward to an IPS screen.
Coming from 14.1 XGA TFT, what should be my expectation? Am I going to have "Holy cow" or "Eh.... what was the big fuss about IPS screens through out the forum?"

You'll find out when you receive it...that's the best I can tell you....

For many people it's not a big deal, and for some of us it's...HUGE...

Having only seen a UXGA flexview display once, I can say I'd have really, really liked to have had one of those. (know the panel is SXGA+ in the OP message, but just saying...).

The only non-IPS 15" T60 had 1024x768 resolution, so yeah, it's IPS.

On the other hand, there were no 14" IPS displays in T60.

All I can say is WOW! Why didn't I get IPS earlier? Difference is night and day!

Congratz on your new machine.

I hope you know the drawback of IPS though... there's no way back. Once you had a laptop with IPS, you will never be satisfied with TN. It's like a drug.

Very addictive drug...
I'm already looking for my next hit in eBay!

Just wondering....
Is Lenovo offering IPS monitors for new T series? Are those HD+ monitors IPS?

So what is my option when my beloved T60 goes belly up?

I would like,
1) IPS screen (Any size)
2) 4:3 Ratio (This is a must!!)
3) Impossible but something close to Thinkpad Keyboard (I detest chicklet keyboard!!!)

Other hardware is fine with better or equivalent to my current T60.
I don't need better processor or memory (I currently have T7200 with 3GB RAM)

You're stuck.

The only thing you can possibly do is build a FrankenPad using your 15" T60 frame and a board from a 14" T61/p.

so, along the lines of the original question - is there a way to know if the screen in a machine is actually an IPS screen? I looked at the EDID information for the LCD in my T60p, and I don't know if it is the original screen. The screen is really nice, but having never seen an IPS panel in person, I can't say it is or it isn't, only that it looks really nice and has some of the qualities I've read an IPS screen should have...

So, based on poking around, the model number from the data string is being sold on ebay as a replacement for a T43... I guess I am wondering if there was a list of screens somewhere that could be cross-referenced?

That would be a huge waste of time. An IPS screen is distinguishable from a non-IPS easily with a naked eye, especially on a laptop.

If you tilt it all the way back and then all the way forward, so that you are looking at it from extreme vertical angles, and the colors stay true (i.e., don't shift, invert, lose tremendous amounts of contrast) - then it is an IPS, not a TN

*theoretically speaking it could be VA, but since to my knowledge no such panels have been produced at these sizes with these resolutions, it cannot be*

thanks for the tip - I guess based on what I found and the extreme angle test, it is an IPS screen. I thought I'd be more "wowed" though ... then I compared it to the screen on my old laptop, which was a "wide viewing angle screen".. ya, I get it now. *hugs T60p*
