You can undervolt a Pentium M to make it cooler without loss in performance, but what about a PowerPlay enabled Radeon or FireGL?
Well you can just go ahead and set a power saving PowerPlay mode, but it will reduce performance, so I thought, is it possible to overclock an ATi card while in power saving mode?
Well yes, definitely, it seems my FireGL V3200 can do 500MHz core and 285MHz mem with the 'Balanced' PowerPlay profile, but clocks are reset every time I run a fullscreen application.
But there is a workaround, ATI tray tools has a hotkey feature, so by saving your overclocked settings i a profile and making hotkeys that loads this profile, you can then run your fullscreen application, hit the hothey and run your GPU overclocked with PowerPlay enabled.
So the result is that I can run 3D graphics on my T43p, CPU undervolted (1.068v max) and GPU in 'Balanced' mode and overclocked to 500/285, seems stable and temps are fine, CPU stays around 60 degrees and the GPU around 80 during extreme loads
Now if only the video BIOS could be modded so you wouldn't need all this software (CCC + ATi Tray tools) to get this working hmm...
