Bought used X20, screen seems kind of loose?

#1 Post by jonliu » Thu Apr 21, 2005 3:15 am

I bought a X20 a couple months ago and noticed that the screen on the unit might be loose. I will try to describe the problem to the best I can.

Basically the screen will sort of flap front and back when it is opened and if i shake the laptop. But when it is closed it is very solid. I took a look at the hinges and noticed that the maybe the bar that goes through the right hinge might of come loose. I compared the the right hinge to the left hinge, and what i noticed was that the bar goes all the way through on the left hinge. But the bar does not go all the way through on te right hinge. The bar is only visable through the right gap of the right hinge (if this makes sense). When i took a peek through the left gap of the right hinge, i did not see the bar. Is this normal?

There should be screws that hold the metal hinges 2 for each hinge. I had the same problem with A31p, I tightened it and it is solid as new.

Looks like I have the same problem on the used X23 I bought and no screws to tighten here, jonliu, did you ever get to the bottom of this ? I was looking at picking up new hinges maybe, but the problem may run deeper.

Thanks for the suggestion, I'll have to look at that, as my X21 is the same way.

Oh, and nice FSM there! RAmen!

You need to tighten the screws holding the hinges to the LCD (which means, opening up the LCD). Tighten those to gain the stiffness desired

Well, in the act of changing the hinges, you would be tightening the screws that attach the hinge to the LCD.

You can skip replacing the hinges and just tighten the screws that attach the hinge to the LCD.

Ok, I'm done and there's nothing to tighthen in there, the hinges (part #2 here http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-39710) need to be replaced. They seem pretty brittle and mine are cracked!

I have some on order, will update when they come in.

New hinges came in, changed them and now the screen is perfectly stable !

I might look into that... I'm sick of pouring money into this X21, tho...

Not to hijack this thread, but I've got an even worse problem. A stuck line. A 2-pixel wide vertical stuck line, stuck on as white. Massaging the area below the line makes it partially disappear (it becomes 1 subpixel wide), but it comes right back.

I paid €11 for the hinges so that's not a big investment ;-)
Not sure about that line doesn't sound very good though!

Yeah, it's really ANNOYING!

I've also tried reseating the LCD connector, but I didn't think that was it, considering that the problem can be partially massaged away.

One of these days, I'm going to open the LCD and check it out.

How did you get it open?

The HMM helped a bit, you've got to pop out the little plastic stickies that cover the screws, I also inserted a couple of wireless antennas designed for the X31, I had to flatten them too. Should have gone for the X2x model but they were €21 instead of €6...when you're cheap !

OK, I didn't remember if the HMM was at all helpful about that...

hey dmdsoftware or GpsPasSion, could you guys describe in a little more detail how to tighten these screws?

any way to tell if the hinge is broken before cracking it open?

actually, dmdsoftware should be familiar with my X20, i bought it from him :)

thanks 8)
