T23 Power Adapter, lower amperage

#1 Post by timotei » Mon Jun 18, 2012 8:08 am

Hello,

I own a ThinkPad T23. I need to buy another power adapter. I read on the back of the T23 that it Has: 16 V and 72 W. That is 4.5A.

I bought recently from amazon: "IBM Original charger AC Adapter AC ADAPTER for IBM Thinkpad T20 T21 T22 T23 T30 T40 T41 T41p T42 T42p T43 T43p T51 LAPTOP Charger power supply". However, just now I see that the adapter has JUST 3.5A.

Is it safe to use that? I read somewhere that it won't work (a lower amperage than required) and it may damage my notebook.

Thanks,
Timo

It will work, but slower, and is bound to probably overheat.
You do need the 16V/72W/4.5A version.
Return it if you can.

I've got a similar question. I picked up an older T22 without a power supply and found one in a box of my junk, left over from my old X41. The two use the same AC adapter, 16V, but after looking at the old one I have I see it's 19 volts. I had used it on my X41 for years without any problems. Do you think it will work on the T22?

You're very likely to wreck the motherboard, using 19V.
That your X41 survived is a small miracle...

Excuse me for sneeking in my similar question:

I got a T22 (2647-8CG) with no AC adapter and I am looking for the right one. The 182 page long official IBM pdf quotes 72W adapters, whereas thinkwiki quotes 56W, which one is corrrect? I would appreciate FRUs or P/Ns too. Many thanks

edit: I just saw that the values are written at the bottom of the laptop : 16V, 3.36A. I am wondering why the pdf has 72W ...

Not sure what actually shipped with some of these machines, but while the lower wattage ones will work, and often work fine, the higher wattage ones are better. They just allow a margin that may not be needed, but means they are taxed as hard when charging a battery.

FRU 02K6753 is an example of an IBM 72W adapter that would be great with any older 16V ThinkPad.

The ones that are "dog bone" shaped were originally shipped with T21s & T22s. Not sure on T23s since i never bought one of those new. The T30s were smaller and were regular 'brick' shaped. I have at least 7 different part #s & FRUs on the bunch of adapters i got with my s-load of t22s, 23s & 30s a couple years ago, including ones that look like my older i-seroes adapters, but i never got around to writing them down, in my parts spreadsheet. They're all in a box back home and there's no way my wife is going to red off to me a series of FRUs volts amps & watts.

The important thing it to match the voltage and not go under on the amps as marked on the ThinkPad itself. And watts is merely a function of volts x amps.
